Just finished college, job lined up ... any chance of getting dole?

    Hi,

Basically I'm just finished final year in college and have been offered a job, but it's not starting til September. I'm still living at home, and I've tried my best to find work for the summer, but can't get anything. Can I apply for the dole? Or am I still considered a student til I actually graduate, or get exam results? And does it make a difference that I've been offered a job already?

Not sure if it's relevant, but I've worked every summer since finishing school ... maybe adds up to 1.5-2 years in total, but I wouldn't have been paying PRSI for most of that due to being on minimum wage.

    Thanks!

your employer would have been paying prsi on your behalf.

I think you should apply for the dole in the interim. You do have the job lined up which is great, it shows you were serious about applying for work. And you're still applying for summer work. I have absolutely no clue if you'll be approved, but you should try, absolutely.

You don't have to wait till you graduate..You need a letter from college stating you're finished college. If you have enough prsi you apply for jobseekers benefit which is not means-tested., if not, you apply for jobseekers allowance which is means-tested.If you are 24 or under and live with your parents, your parents income is means tested. search' living with your parents' on www.losingyourjob.ie to find out how the means-test works.

I can remember the day as if it was yesterday when i dropped out of college after 2 years and got the doel that week. I couldn't believe the government were handing out money to people who weren't working yet you had to survive on 30euro a week in college. after that i said never again....
