Tell me what to buy...

Ok, I'd consider myself to have a good idea about cars and am thinking about changing my car (06 Leon 1.6) for a diesel but seeing all the shiney new possible toys is just like throwing common sense out the window. Petrol is killing me and over 3 years or so the sums tell me it will work out cheaper all things considered.

So here's what I want...
From calling around it seems I'm being allowed 9-10k on my own car (I know its the cost to change that matters but this is just for budget purposes). I have 5-7k max to go with this.

Must have:
Cruise
Air Con...but would like climate if possible
Alloys
Arm rest
Multifunction steering wheel

In addition the priorities are
2006 or newer (may go to 2005)
Will cover 30k a year as trouble free as possible
Be quiet, economical and have some go in it
Decent residuals at the end (I know it's a loosing game but...)
Not mad expensive to keep on the road
Looks well at a Motors Meet:p

If it was near-ish to Cork so that I can have a look tomorrow all the better:D

So...please point me in the right direction before I wind up with a white Laguna with Yellow Donegal plates at the back:eek:

Whatever you buy will be next to worthless in 3 years time and another nearly 100k miles on the clock. But that has a positive side as well, as it opens up suggestions to cars you would not have thought of

How about an Alfa GT diesel?

With a push, you might be able to get an '07 for the higher end of your budget.

Alfas have a 3 year manufacturers warrantee, so you if you bought an '07, there'd be a bit of that left too for peace of mind.

Combi's seem to be cheaper than Hatch's, but that's a good sleeper - Resale will be muck though. Apart from that it should fit most of your requirements, except maybe the MFSW.

That does look good, shame it's not a DSG though.

This is a tough one!! as you have a decent enough motor as it is and if you do change for something around the same year with a maximum 1 year warranty you leave yourself quite open.

I would be buying new, deals are so good now you would be a fool not to if you the had the money!!!

A brand new diesel Impreza for 20k or ( dont laugh ) a new fun little Fiesta for 17k with a 1.6 120bhp unit and power to weight to ratio of 122 bhp/ton

Oh that Octavia is nice...but being 26 and single I dunno about the Combi.

The Alfa has got me drooling though - Going to give one some serious thought and have a look through the owners forums. Cheers for the pointers - I was getting seriously bogged down with all the options and couldn't make my mind up:o
