Flawed? I would say completely pointless, a waste of taxpayers money and something that should be resisted here.

I would like to hear one sound argument for a scrappage scheme.

The British and German actually build cars, so they have some kind of excuse. We on the other hand, don't, so most profits will leave the country.

Last time around in Ireland, they said it was to get "unsafe" cars off the road. Now however, we have the NCT to take care of that.

The Irish Times Motoring "Supplement" is calling for a scrappage scheme.
Michael McAleer and Paddy Comyn really must not have any shame.
Given that the supplement is really an excuse for pages and pages of motoring advertisements, it is no wonder - The supplement is effectively financed by the SIMI

    So much for journalistic ethics....

Scrapping a usable car is also ecologically unsound. Keep the cars going and avoid the huge use of resources involved in manufacturing a replacement new car. How about some incentive for people to keep their older cars going? Have the Greens anything to say about this, hello? Oh they've just faded away (or maybe they're helping with the reduction in bus services).

Not so. Considering all you're doing is handing back the taxpayer some of their own money - which we all agree we're being ripped off on (VRT), then it's an excellent way to get something back. So long as you're interested in cars, that is.

One sound argument ? I think the above is one, for a start.

A second one is that, let's be honest, age alone does not make a car 'classic'. Sometimes, an old car is exactly that - an old car, and the car you're advocating buying, is built already, so there's nothing to save by NOT buying it. My 2002 Mazda 2.0D MPV is a case in point. If I could get scrappage on it - I'd gladly send it to the crusher.

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Yes,most old cars are exactly what you say,old cars, but if they are running well and within MOT/NCT standard, what is wrong with them?
They say it will get rid of older polluting cars,is the MOT/NCT not there to keep that in check?
It was fine 15 years ago in this country,as the amount of untested wrecks on the road held together with string and filler was unreal, but it just doesnt wash now. Most cars back then had no catalytic converters and all the other emission controls that 90% of cars on the road surely have today.I just dont buy into the older cars polluting story they keep pumping out..

Its a moneymaking excercise first and foremost. The environment speil is just to make people feel better about themselves.
