My sister recently purchased a 1997 Toyota Cynos (Automatic) has 102,000klm on the clock. She got it at a good price but no warranty. She has since inquired about the timing belt. The garage told her its done that theres a sticker on the engine. The only one there is a japanees one with 100,000klms on it.

We don't know if the garage is trying to fool us or what. Does anyone know how we can find out for sure if it done. I'm aware its a big job if the timing belt snaps. Also were can I get a manual for it as the one it came with is in bloody japanees...

    Any info would be appreciated??????

The Golden Rule = If in doubt, take it out.
Dont trust the sticker, it could just be an oil change sticker. When buying a second hand car always make an alowance for getting the timing belt done for peace of mind.
You should be able to find a manual online with a bit of searching. Owners clubs are usualy the best source.

Thanks I'll let her know. She did get a mechanic to check it out when she got it. He reckoned she should get the timing belt done to be sure that otherwise its a good car. How can I find out if it will be expensive.

It won't be too expensive, Cynos shares it's mechanicals with the Starlet/Corolla and is a very straightforward car to work on. it's also annoyingly reliable!

Get a good service with suspension bushes, timing belt/waterpump/auxillary belts get some decent tyres for it and enjoy!

Cynos is the same as the European Paseo model.

FWIW I would get it changed, will cost upwards of 200e

    prob 300e to get done
