Im currently in a pretty good job in IT. There are some redundancies, but hopefully I will not be one of them.

As there will be redundancies, I have just been browsing the job's market. There is very little there, but I have found one job that stirrs my interest.

Its in an area of IT that I have some experience, but would allow me to grow a lot. The work would be more difficult, but the experience would be much better.

I cant be sure, but from reading the job spec, I believe I could potentially get that job if I done a good interview.

My question is: Assuming im not made redundant and Im sure my job is secure, pays well and is quite cushy, is it worth moving to a new job where you will be the new guy, have to go through probation again, in such hard times with more competition than ever against you, but the gains would be experience obtained.

I'm basically wondering what other boarders would do.

For me it would very much depend on how stable the other company was and that's a very hard thing to gauge from the outside. To be honest, at the moment I'd probably veer on the side of caution and stay where I was.

I'd personally stay where I was if i believed my job to be safe. You never know what might be happening on the inside of that other company. However if you're the type to enjoy a challenge then go for it and may you enjoy whatever you decide!

If it's a stable company and it's not going to fold in the near future then okay maybe. Also remember that you may be made redundant from your current job and you should get money from it. If you move, you're in the "last in, first out position" and you won't get any money until you're with them a certain period.
Tough one. If you can judge how stable the company is, then maybe. Otherwise I'd stay where I am!!

How long are you in your current job? I'm in mine less than 2 years so don't qualify for any redundancy should the poo hit the fan, which would make it a little easier to think about moving.

Personally I think you've nothing to lose by applying for the job, once it doesn't cause any problems at your current job (taking time off / word getting back etc). Worst case, you don't get a call back.

Given the severeness of the current recession, anyone recruiting now is actually a safer bet than an existing employer.

Or, they're such an unbearable one that someone actually quit knowing what the market was like out there.....

It would entirely depend on the job, company, location, pay, etc. That said it's relatively unlikely right now. I've got a good (and secure) job at the moment and I don't see any jobs in my area of speciality that would be sufficient improvement to warrant a change.

Im am in a similar situation, I am in the banking industry and everyone knows what crap we are putting up along with not liking other aspects to it. Since I started there 2 years ago, Ive never enjoyed the industry coming from admin background. Only took the job as was only job round when came back from travelling.Ive been looking for admin jobs and there are a few but dont know if Id be the most foolish person in the world to leave now. Ive been trying to leave for a while. Im just afraid what ppl would think etc. Please I need your honest views on this. My family have mixed opinions and dont seem to want to listen about it. Help ???

Is your job causing you sleepless nights worrying about making mistakes the next day?
Is your job working shifts which you find sleeping difficult during the day?
Have you had no payrise for 5 years and have been threatened with a pay cut because of a internal move when your original organisation was shifted to a foreigm location?
Were you offered redundancy with the realisation that there would be fewer people left in the area doing more work each and more savings needed each year?
If , as you say your current job is cushy and the pay is manageable for your needs the I would stay.
If however your job is causing you major grief and you have an opportunity to go with 1-2 yrs money to tide you over then I would go.
