never followed "True Blood" - is it any good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,153 ✭✭✭ronano

Damn you! i wanted to make one of these threads but you have similar taste so tis all good

The Shield - great cop show, fast paced, gets mentioned in regard to the wire

Veronica Mars - highschool teen amateur sleuth, sounds terrible right :P but tis exceptional, season long arc for the first season trying to figure out who killed her best friend.

Big Love - hbo show about a polygmist family

Breaking Bad - there's a thread down the page about it,best thing on tv at the mo

I've not sold any of these well,im tired and hungry, forgive me

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 413 ✭✭spooydermot

if you like shows along the lines of 'House' then you could give 'lie to me' a try, it's about halfway through it's first season at the mo and has been picked up for a second

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 396 ✭✭dez_warlock

Yeah it's crappy alright but there's plenty of good shows to check out on DVD.

Deadwood - Cancelled after 3 seasons but a great show.

Carnivale - Has 2 seasons and is pretty decent aswell.

Sons of Anarchy - only working my way through this now and it's pretty solid.

Dexter - If you haven't seen it then it's definitely worth checking out. Every season is brilliant.

After Sons of Anarchy I'm thinking of trying Six Feet Under or Rome. Anyone know which is the better of the 2? Any other recommendations?

    cheers Ronano,

good thinking "The Shield" - seen a few of those - seems pretty solid - is it still on? there's got to be 7 seasons there - that'd keep me going for a while.

Veronica Mars - you're right I wouldn't have though this would be my kinda show .... but I've been surprised before ... anyone seen Life?

Big Love - know nothing about this - will check out

Breaking Bad - I did start to watch this and I can't fault the acting - it was excellent but my intrest drifted after about 4 or 5 episodes - maybe i should give it another chance.

what happened to entourage ... is that still on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 115 ✭✭eske

yes Deadwood was brilliant - all the good shows get axed

carnivale - think i caught one or two of them - quite enjoyed the quirky trippiness ... must investigate

    Dexter is inbetween seasons

Rome is brilliant - only 2 seasons though made though

6 feet under - yes there's another show I liked and followed for a few seasons and then completely lost trac of

Sons of Anarchy - i have watched the first season and it's not bad but not in the same league as some of the other shows mentioned

dez_warlock - watch Rome first- it's absolutely wonderful

spookydermot thanks man - hadn't heard of "lie to me" at all - will check it out on IMDB

Sons of Anarchy started last week on Bravo so that is earmarked for viewing.

Anyone know when True Blood (S1) is starting on FX UK?

Shield has 6 seasons so there is enough to keep you going

Not seen life but give veronica mars 2/3 episodes to see if its your thing

You might like Oz as well, hbo drama set in an experimental prison programme, the first few seasons are great and it has allot of actors from other hbo shows/the wire

7, actually. I just finished season 5 and its outstanding.

Life is great, and The Mentalist is one of my favourite new shows. If you haven't tried Fringe, give it a shot.

Someone on this forum keeps saying how good The Hills is. No idea what its about or when its on, but god dammit, I need to see what all the youngsters are watching and see what its about. Its my civic duty as moderator here.

YES Oz - good call - kinda hardcore but fascinating in a car crash sort of way - great stories - well acted

Watch a few movies instead. I always use these months to catch up on the backlog.

BTW, don't waste your time with Carnivale. It's just painful protracted guff. You can actually see it speeding up and becoming half-decent towards the very end (last half-dozen eps or so - presumably because they knew they were getting axed?) but it only serves to further highlight how much this show was taking the piss in the 18 or so eps that preceded it.

I only mention it here because this is where the show was recommended to me repeatedly.

mr.lizard what movies are you excited about? Anything of interest out on DVD?

It is by far and away the best show on tv that no-one watches.

Film choices are very subjective so it's hard to really recommend anything to you. Basically you already know yourself best.

However that said, here's a few 'must sees' imho from last year or so:
    - frost nixon
    - in bruges
    - man on wire
    - the wave
    - waltz with bashir

And if you just want a few "purely entertaining" movies then I personally enjoyed
    - 21
    - Get Smart
    - Hancock
    - Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
    - Role Models
    - speed racer

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,942 ✭✭✭missingtime

    Pffft movies. Watch Fringe.

I wanna watch October Road...tis cancelled, anyone seen it?
Also, ....i really enjoyed a long since cancelled show broadcast on Fox back in Summer 2000, Fox only broadcast 6 episodes and pulled the plug...anywhoo, it's called Opposite Sex.

    If you haven't seen the following (and this goes for everyone) there's plenty of entertainment here for the long summer between shows;

Drama and/or Sci-Fi - Oz, The Sopranos, Dexter, Dollhouse, Firefly, House, Dark Angel

Dramedy - Freaks and Geeks, Chuck, Monk, Shameless, Popular (although as a warning it ends abruptly)

Comedy - The Inbetweeners, My Name Is Earl, Undeclared, Two and a Half Men, That '70s Show, The IT Crowd, Black Books, The Big Bang Theory, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Married With Children

Reality - Survivor, Beauty and the Geek, The Amazing Race, Big Brother US (it's nothing like the UK version - far superior in every sense)

Sci-Fi/Drama for teenagers The Tribe (Didn't want to put this in with the Drama/Sci-Fi section because it is for teens, but excellent all the same)

I'll be watching The Wire, Stargate SG1/Atlantis, and The Apprentice US this summer to begin with and I'll see how long they keep me going.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,634 ✭✭✭✭Richard Dower

Well i have a couple of new shows to watch in the Summer, ABC Family will have season 2 of The Secret Life Of The American Teenager, 10 Thinga I Hate About You and Make It Or Break It.

The Unusuals still has three episodes to go and Harpers Island still has 7 in it's run....both of which have been axed. After that...Big Brother 10.

OP.. you need to open your mind to the wealth of great shows out there you haven't seen - both still airing or ended.

I've a few shows planned for the Summer myself..

Need to finish The Shield (only watched first season).
Need to finish Supernatural (mid-way through season 2).
Need to finish The West Wing (mid-way through season 5.. I think).
Need to finish Angel (only started season 2).
Gonna watch Sons of Anarchy (season 1).
Gonna finish The Wire (starting season 3).

I personally recommend 'True Blood' (particularly as it's starting it new season in about a months time).. it's first season while started terribly because incredibly exciting and consistent 3 or 4 episodes in. Really great stuff!

It's a shame more people didn't watch it.. but I almost didn't either after that woeful pilot episode.

I don't think I've seen In Treatment mentioned, very good first season, haven't started watching the second yet (same goes for Mad Men). Not sure what I'm going to get into next, might give The Shield another go (watched 3 seasons ages ago, never thought it was great though, am always surprised to see it mentioned with the Wire - IMO if you gon into it expected anything near the briiliance of the wire you'll be sorely dissapointed). Might be time for another run through of Twin Peaks too.

How come no one's mentioned Jericho?

It's been dead a few years but it's definately the best show no one you know has ever seen.

    Quality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,176 ✭✭✭1huge1

Ya I agree, a lot of my shows are either finished or on a break at the moment

    How I met your mother
    Lost

Only got 3 more episodes of ER ever, depressing thought

Stuff not mentioned in this thread so far.

Reapers not bad. Worth having a look at if you haven't seen before. Hasn't been renewed for a third season but it's light stuff.

Burn Notice is back next week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,067 ✭✭✭L31mr0d

Now is a great time to break out of your comfort zone and try out shows you either missed when they where first aired or didn't seem like your cup of tea initially.

Anime is a good example, some really excellent shows out there that cover all tastes (sci-fi, action, comedy, drama, romance... etc) Don't write off the whole catalogue of shows because they are animated. Ergo Proxy might be a start, as well as Elfin Lied.

I'd also give Fringe a go, watch the entire season though, Walter just keeps getting better as a character as the season goes on.

    The Mentalist is also good.

If you haven't already, for comedy, watch Flight of the Conchords, Arrested Development and Curb your Enthusiasm.

Also, stick with Breaking Bad, it keeps getting better, season 2 has been fantastic.

For chewing gum for the brain (we all need some now and again :p) I watch Wipeout (American and UK version of Takeshi's Castle, hilarious), Survivor (the last 3 seasons have been fantastic) and Mythbusters

Also if you haven't already, the Planet Earth series is must watch TV.

I would recommend 2 quality unscripted reality shows; Survivor and The Amazing Race.

Survivor is shown on TG4 but only a couple of seasons of The Amazing Race have ever been screened here on obscure satellite channels. There was even one episode of The Amazing Race filmed in Ireland a couple of seasons back.

While Survivor is unscripted, it is edited for dramatic effect. A lot of stuff is cut out to polarize the personalities of the different survivors. I guess it's because of this that a lot of people think the show is staged, as every episode is consistently entertaining and real life just isn't like that (watch Shipwrecked on channel 4 ) Plus, I think when a vote out is almost guaranteed they tell someone to just mention the might be voting for someone else, to give the viewer doubt and make the result seem unknown until it is revealed.

    Because it sucks.

There's plenty of other shows listed that are a far better investment of time. My own one, which I don't believe has been mentioned, would be "Homicide: Life on the Street" the first TV output from David "The Wire" Simon (based on his book).

It sucks that it was cancelled. Jericho had everything going for it, a classic phoenix story and rise of a hero, mystery, corruption, adventure.

I've read a lot of post nuclear fallout stuff as well as played games around it and the possibilities for story development where endless.

This had the US split and on the brink of civil war, mass amounts of nuclear devastation, complete break down of society and order, fear, mobs, mercenaries, militia... the arcs the story could of taken in this show where endless.

I was truly gutted when this show got cancelled... for the second time :(
