    Drogheda - 34,336 inhabitants
    Dundalk - 33,730 inhabitants

Why are Drogheda and Dundalk number 1 and 2 in the republic in terms of population?

First off where did you get them figures from because wiki they are 35,090 and 35,085 respectively.

But to answer you question I would say it has to do with Dublin Belfast route.

The most recent census, 2006, provides Small Area Population Statistics. Worth checking out.

Dundalk has always been pretty big and has grown a lot in the last few years but drogheda has grown massively due to a lot of dubs moving out of the city

A typical dundalk response to the whole debate of the bigger town .Drogheda has grown alot in the last few years but there are lots of factors in this not just the people who moved up from dublin , we have a large immigrant community also, polish and african being the largest .Dundalk has the largest african population per head in the whole of Ireland that boosts its population significantly .Also there are lots of people who live and work in Drogheda and there adresses are co Meath , they arent taken into account as far as i know in the population of the town .

The fact is that Dundalk and Drogheda have both been large towns for over a century now, with their location between Dublin and Belfast being pivotal in their large sizes.

Drogheda has indeed seen an influx of commuters from Dublin but Dundalk has also grown in recent years. Their populations both sit around the 35,000 mark today.

Dundalk and Drogheda were both big towns of 15,000+ back in the 1950s when Navan was a slip of a place with less than 4,000 people, Galway was just essentially a large town of 24,000 and Tallaght was a mere village of 200.
