    Anyone watch Mad Men.

Im nearly finsihed Season 1 and its one of the best TV programmes ive seen in a long time.

Perfectly cast, especially January Jones whos character I am in love with!

It reminds me of a simpler time (everyone smokes, everywhere!), all the men make crude jokes about women even in their presence. The staff in the office seem to have no work to do most of the time and spend their days drinking whiskey neat and chattin up women. To be honest it looks awesome.

It's an outstanding piece of television, right up there with The Wire & The Sopranos for me.

you've got a choice to make...

    ... dinner or a movie!"

I've only started watching it the last few weeks on RTE. Very glossy but unbelievably slow paced. Is it worth persisting with?

I have watched a lot of the wire so i'm used to slow paced tv shows. I just felt no storyline stood out for me. That being said i've only seen two episodes.

Fvck me you have good taste:D

Quality show, Don Draper is just a great character and I love Roger Sterling. The casting is definitely spot on and all the characters no matter how small are interesting and you always want to learn more about them.

I love the way they stick it on at half 2 in the morning:rolleyes: Clowns.

And Riemann c'mon peggy aint that bad:p

I've heard a lot of people say its slow but I must say I never found it slow.

I think people are just so used to plot driven shows now where every episode (even every season ffs) ends on a massive cliffhanger.

Mad Men is a lot more character driven. For me its just a joy to watch the characters interact and learn more about them because they are all so well realised.

I saw the first few episodes and found it really pretentious so I quit it. Then on a flight to Chicago the entertainment service had the entire first season available, so I watched the rest of it on that flight and on the way back the following week. I found it much more watchable in long chunks, so I acquired the 2nd series and watched it over a few days.

I still think it's quite pretentious, but it's worth watching for the vibe alone. I intend to wait until after a series ends and watch it several episodes at a time from now on.

Funny you should mention watching it in chunks, that was a thought I had when it started I reckoned as it was only 45 mins long 2 episodes back-to-back would work well.

Just started watching this last week. Am nearly finished series 1. Love it!! The style, the atmosphere, the characters...great show. Lovin the complexity of the Don Draper character.

Also hilarious how they smoke ALL the time, EVERYwhere!

It is a great show. Advertising is something you never really think about now, but these people where right on the cusp of it's boom. I love when they mentioned "99c... somebody thought of that", it's true, some advertising genius came up with the idea that people will buy more of a product if it's 99c instead of $1.

I thought season 2 wasn't near as good as season 1 (probably because I enjoyed the advertising side of it more than the Don Draper existentialism), and actually, until right now I thought the show had been cancelled, glad to see it's getting a 3rd season.

Are you sure ? I thought it was a mechanism to ensure sales were put through the till, i.e. the customer had to be given change.

I finished Season 2 last week. A great show, unless you've the attention span of a hyperactive child ;)

Yup, that's pretty much what it is. It's a myth that it makes people subconsciously think the item is priced lower, retail staff were just told that as it sounds better than "we don't trust you not to steal from us." In reality customers find the 99c system an assumed insult to their intelligence. It's all about ensuring items went through the til in the days before EPOS systems, etc, kept precise inventory. It's why most modern shops now round up but shops like charity shops still use 99c most of the time.

Nope :pac: I'm only going on what was said in the show. It was in one of the first episodes of season 1 that it was mentioned that it was invented as an advertising and sales mechanism.

There's also this link, which cites various possible sources of this approach, one being what you mentioned, but another being for marketing purposes. Both could equally be right. I certainly wouldn't call it a myth either as studies have shown the tendency for shoppers to prefer buying items that end in 99, 95 or 49.
