It was relesed today. Anyone pick it up? Was thinking of getting it myself, but just wondering is it much different from Diamond/Pearl? I finished Pearl a good while ago, so I've been wanting a new Pokemon game.

It's probably worth it with the storyline change and the addition of a Battle Frontier rip-off, although it does appeal more to the hardcore fans.

I'm not rushing out to get it though, since I already have both the Jaanese and American versions!

Picked it up friday, not played it much further than the first gym badge but so far it's pretty much the same game as Diamond / Pearl with a few knobs on. Same map, same starters, same events at least early on in the game. GTS has new functionality, and it's snowing everywhere. And your trainer is wearing a heavier jacket. Awesometastic!

That said, Diamond was the same game as Emerald, Red, Blue, Fuschia etc. and that didn't stop it being fun. Crucially, you can catch a slightly expanded range of pokemon in the various different regions (for example, you can catch Ponyta at level 5 or 6, giving you the option of a non-starter fire type to take on all the bugs and plants in the forest, and you can catch wurmples at level 5ish so you won't be stuck with a Dustox early on that doesn't know Confusion) so you may not end up with exactly the same team as you did in D/P. But you probably will.

Basically, if you're a rabid fan of the series, you've probably already bought it. If you're not a fan, you're never going to buy it. If you're on the fence, and if you haven't played Diamond or Pearl, this is the one of the 3 to get.

I wish they'd change the starters in these third games, like Pikachu in Yellow! That said, I'm a bit of a rabid Pokémon fan so I'll probably pick this up at some stage.

Well it does increase your Fire-type choices from two, to.... five.

If you want to get really technical, the technically Yellow was a fourth version, since Blue in Japan was a third version to the original Red and Green versions :D

But to be even more technical green was the exact same game as blue, so its the same game with a different name, therefore Yellow is a third version.

Blue was an improved version of Red and Green. Although nothing majorly changed in the gameplay, it's still considered a third version. Yellow was released subsequent to that with much changed gameplay, so it should be considered a fourth version rather than a third.
Pocket Monsters Blue (Japanese: ポケットモンスター 青) was the third Pokémon game released in Japan on October 10, 1996, as a minor revision of Red and Green, which were released earlier that year. It was thus the first third version of Pokémon, and was initially sold only to subscribers to CoroCoro.
Pokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition, oftentimes known simply as Pokémon Yellow Version, is the third Pokémon game released worldwide, as a follow up to Pokémon Red and Blue. In Japan, it was the fourth Pokémon game, released as ポケットモンスター ピカチュウ (Japanese: Pocket Monsters Pikachu), after Red, Green, and Blue.

Pardon me TheChrisD-san but your Location says Dunboyne, not Okinawa, which would put you in the "worldwide" catagory rather than the "japan" catagory, ergo it's the third version.
Next you'll be calling Battle of the Planets "Gatchaman" - it's a madhouse!

On the Fire Types thing, yes they're still pathetically underepresented but for folks who didn't choose the chimp as their starter it represents a 100% increase in fire type availability pre-breedy-town. And the great thing about pedantic little points like this is that if you care then maybe it's worth buying Platinum even if you've played Diamond, Pearl or both. And if you don't, it's not :)

Just to tell you's the secret key wi-fi mystery gift is available atm. It enables you to change the form of Rotom. To activate mystery gift follow this guide: http://www.serebii.net/platinum/mysterygift.shtml

Once you get the secret key, go to the team galactic building in Eterna City. Once you walk in the door, go to the top left corner of the building and press a against the wall, The secret room will then open and there wil be 5 machines in the room. Press A at any of the machines to turn Rotom into it.
