Trouble with VW Polo Gears

I drive a VW Polo 2000 and was out yesterday when the gears became very difficult to change - third and fourth not so much, but first and second were nearly impossible to get into. Barely got the car home in the end, and now I can't manage to get it into gear at all.

I noticed yesterday, when in first and the clutch was fully at the floor it seemed to be at least partially at the biting point, so even when the clutch was fully down the car was moving a bit. Then, today when I checked, the default position for the clutch is much closer to the floor than previously, and pressing it down doesn't seem to do anything.

I'd had a problem with the clutch "squeaking" a while back and my dad adjusted the clutch cable, which stopped the squeaking. I suspect the cable may now be the problem, whether it became loose or something I'm not sure.

If anyone has any suggestions as to what the problem may be, I'd be very grateful. If it is the cable, I'd be willing to have a look myself (though I'm not very DIY-ish) if I could find a decent guide how to do it - a quick search didn't turn up much. I'd be happy enough to get a quick fix and drive it up to a garage at this stage!

    Thanks!

This exact same thing happened to my old car.

You put your foot down on the clutch, put it into first and the car starts to move already.

I ended up actually putting a new clutch in the thing altogether, but that being said , a few weeks later the clutch cable snapped on it.

Right on the day I was trading it in! Doh!

So anyway, I'd say it's clutch cable or clutch.

your polo prob needs a pedal box very common in in 2000 model polo.
€250 approx to fix any independent mechanic would fix, or they can weld the part that is broken, prob cost much same thou but would wear better

Clutch, clutch cable, pedal box - all common on a Polo I'm afraid.

    So I'm beginning to believe.

Thanks for all the suggestions, will try and get it to a garage on Monday. Cable adjustment didn't help at all unfortunately :(
