With regards to internal promotions not regarding the current moratorium,is it necessary to have some third level education to progress in the force, i know from another thread there are seargeants without, but beyond that is it a case of qualifications or are these made available to gardai (templemore or mccabe fellowship and the like)?
Obviously college wasnt as accesible 20 years ago so will it be seen as a requirement in time to come,to have a degree in something or do they decide on individual personality and merit?

Finally (sorry) is the promotion system fair/transparent?

They changed it to make it "Transparent" but I wouldn't like to air my feelings oln that one on a public forum.

No, you don't need a 3rd level qualification for promotion-in fact from what I've seen the thicker the better!!

I cant see there being many answers to this on a public forum.....

From my experience in AGS third level education is useless to ya (apart from the added increments for having one) unless you want to do a desk job and get promoted as fast as you can and have no interest in being frontline for your career.
A degree etc is of no advantage on the regular, drugs unit, ddu, task force, traffic etc etc. (however it would be useful if you want to go into tech bureau)

    Thats my 2 cent

That made me laugh:D, they appear to apply that principle in some areas of the Ambulance Service too:P

This topic always comes up and it always goes the same....People who don't have degrees say it is useless and people who have degrees say it is useful.

There's only one way to find out........
    wait and see :P

Depends on the degree obliviously. But ya I know what you mean, but at the same time, for anyone wanting to join AGS and who is contemplating going to college first...Go to college first, do J1's and the like and then join. The four years and your degree won't be a complete waste.

+1, i fully agree, dont join too young, live a bit first

Agree 100%. Better off joining with a bit of mileage under your belt.

I agree with the lads. I did a three year degree, finished it, but didn't bother travelling cos it didn't interest me in the slightest. I'm too much of a home bird! However I'm glad I did the degree cos I got to experience college life and then join afterwards.

plus if you decide to leave AGS, you'll have something to fall back on, namely your degree etc.

An extension of this thread, even if a little OT is the upper age limit for AGS.
I was very pleasantly surprised to see how the Met in London have a far broader age range from which they accept applications....old dog...hard road ? :D

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

I'm currently training for the reserves, but this subject has come up numerous times both in the college and during follow up training.

What is the thinking behind having it capped at 35?

just on the above points, how much mileage under the belt is enough / too much? I was always under the impression that they wanted eager young bright eyed things?

The reason I ask is I went to college and when I graduated I went face first into the freeze...which will leave me 25 in 2011 and feeling long in the tooth when I eventually get in!

THe upper age limit is 35 years old and no they are not looking for young bright eyed recruits. I found that most in management would prefer to have a mix of young and of the more experienced person in the organisation. Both groups each bring certain qualities to the job.

If someone is young doesn't mean they aren't "Experienced".

Very true. I dont mean all young people are inexperienced in life as some will be more mature and level headed than an older person.

25 would leave you right in the middle as far as I can see 25 is about the average age for our intake
