Maybe not the MOST underrated, but they're certainly fun.

    indeed...
well i would have to say i believe they are. the reason i think this is the sheer volume of major bands that quote them as formative influence, (primus, radiohead to name a few) but as far back as i can remember, there has never been one mention of them on any tv, radio poll etc which is surprising considering the quantity of quality work they produced.

my guess is because they stopped touring in 1982 cos the singer andy partridge had a mental breakdown on stage because his wife threw out his valium and he has crippling stage fright!

Great band alright, I first heard them with Life Begins At The Hop though didn't know who they were at the time. Making Plans for Nigel was when they gained a proper place in my psyche so to speak.

Certainly XTC were highly underrated, but probably not the most underrated band.

English Settlement and Black Sea are fabulous albums. Oranges and Lemons brilliant too.

First time I heard Kaiser Chiefs I thought they were XTC.

Making Plans For Nigel is a superb track.

Ever since the tender age of 13, I was a devotee of St.Andrew of Partridge.

Not only do I have every XTC LP ever made, I also have most of them autographed. They are too precious to play so I leave them pinned up in my mini-XTC shrine and just listen to my CDs.

I also like all the side projects too...Dukes of Stratosphere, Shriekbak and most lately of all, Monstrance (Partrigde and Andrews).

Nonsuch and English Settlement are particular high-water marks.

I covet the three-volume DVD bootleg set of their various appearances and interviews on TV that I got from a source close to the band.

Not only that, but my favourite Irish band, Pugwash, are now signed to Andy Partridge's record label, Ape.

...now I'll have to spend the rest of the evening trying to get out of fan-boy mode. Thanks.

Only really discovered XTC last year.
I definitely think that Skylarking is one of the most underrated albums of all time and arguably the best record of the 80's.

Andy was a terrific pop songwriter.I really appreciate the way they could be pure silly sometimes.Mayor of Simpleton makes me smile everytime i hear it.:)

Not sure if they're that underrated, although admittedly don;t know them that well.Drums And Wires is terrific,as are most of their singles.I always thought they were held in very high critical regard even if their profile has been fairly low since they stopped touring.
