    Hi,

Dad went back to work this morning after a weeks holiday to discover he wasn't mentioned on the roster. Nor is he mentioned for next weeks roster. He contacted his area manager and was told to be out in their head office for a meeting later on today.

Surely you can't be made redundant for taking agreed holidays, can you ?

    Any thoughts please ?

    Thanks

Maybe he was being let go anyway.

Probably just bad timing that his holidays coincided with these business decisions.
They probably knew about these decisions before he left but did not want to ruin his hols.
Depending on the amount of people let go, the Area Mgr should of been onsite to give him the news first thing (out of courtesy), instead of him wondering what was going on.

    Company in showing-no-sensitivity-or-common-decency-in-letting-someone-go shock.

You'll need to hear the full story first. Is there not some notice period that must be worked or at least paid for before doing this? The whole thing is a minefield, and depending on length of service and numerous other factors there may or may not be further recourse available to your Dad. Try to ascertain the facts and take it from there. I'm sure the meeting will be informative!

Thanks for the replies. Seems they just want to move him to a different site but put him through personal hell for the whole of Friday. Charming people!. At least he's still employed. Cheers.

Sounds more like a simple administrative error and that your dad assumed the worst. Everyone is fearful about their jobs these days, especially in the construction sector - it's so easy to jump to conclusions.

He's lucky! But I do have a friend who went with us on holiday for a week, went to work on the following Monday and was told that they had let everyone go. And that was it. They didn't want to ring him and spoil his holiday.
You wouldn't be the first to jump to that conclusion!!
