    hey starfox,

this is a tough one, while on one hand the possibilities are endless, on the other hand the positions are few and far between. dont let that put you off though, there are jobs out there, you just have to get noticed and be sh1t hot!!

if you're into electronic production then something like games soundtracks is a "non-obvious" career path. also AV post-production.

check out "sound engineer" on wiki and have a look at all the listed possibilities.

I think there are very few jobs about.

However the few there are will go to the good guys. Be a good guy!!

James in Sun is an example - he started there winding cables making coffee and fixing headphones.

Now he's on the telly with those Raw Sessions!

by the sounds of your post you're obviously starting in pulse? im there at the moment and while its not on my course, ive had a look at soundtrack pro. its a multimeadia production suite used in the sound for tv area.

i wouldnt be too worried about career oppertunities just yet. as you go thru your course you'll hear more and more about jobs that are out there, you'll start making connections etc etc.

like i said before, just be good. be very good.

Most courses have a module on the industry and the type of roles that are available.

BBC website also has a section dedicated to music industry employment. It's a good place to get started.

http://uk.music-jobs.com/is a pretty good site if you'd consider working in the UK. Subscribe, Don't pay them btw any you'll see what kind of jobs come up very quickly.

I'd advise you to start looking for jobs immediately and not leave it till the end of the year when everybody else is looking too.

I'd say soundtrack pro would be useful getting into the audio for video business, where the money is better!!!

Have a backup and as quickly as possible get hands on experience:

    out of the 2:

1: I have a certificate from a college that im a sound engineer / studio dude I know logic etc...

2: I have no certificate but ive worked in such and such with various types of bands and I know Logic or whatever....

I will be more inclined to look at guy number 2 im afraid, I do find (not you as I dont know you) alot of guys from colleges tend to open their mouths rather than shut them because the cert makes them think they are ready to jump in on the next U2 session.

I always say go in with a clear vision, ask all the guys on here and set yourself a goal maybe it might be " by next summer I would like to have sat in on 2 sessions in 2 studios " dont think to big, ive met guys 4 years on with no job no experience and they wonder why....

    Hi Starfox
I teach Logic and Soundtrack for Poppyhill.
I will be doing a Soundtrack presentation in the coming weeks so you should contact Willie about coming along.
Soundtrack links with (Apple's video editing software) Final Cut Pro.
Most indie films and a lot of tv is edited on FCP so a STP qualification would be good if you were interested in getting into audio post production.
The beauty of STP is that it integrates with FCP and you can send files and mixes back and forth without worrying about sync and it will update your audio mix if there are any video edits made after you have finished a mix.
Feel free to PM me if you want
    Michael

Just thought I'd come in on this one.
Starfox, like Mick from Trackmix said, Soundtrack is very worthwhile as it's an integral part of working with Final Cut Pro so would help open up the AV area of the industry to you. I'll keep you informed on the date for the presentation and you can sit in. BTW, it's €495 and not €600 and if the course is popular we will try to reduce the cost further. Take your time, you can decide as the year progresses if you want to take the module.
As regard careers, this week alone I've received 2 calls, one from a studio looking for an engineer and another looking for a couple of live engineers. So like a previous poster said, the jobs are there and if you're one of the good ones you'll always be high on the list for recommendation.
Look forward to having you here!
    Cheers!
    Willie
