Quality Control

Will the masses of crap electronic music ever stop being released? Is it just me or, if you take away the classics, you are left with 99% of utter turd to download on any major legal mp3 download site.

I say 99% of the music content is crap because every time I go to look for new tunes, at best 1 in 100 is decent, and even at that I probably wouldnt even use it in a set. Thinking about it, I might find 1 track in 200 or more that i would actually use.

And before somebody points it out, yes the mass of crap tunes out there does make me appreciate finding a decent one even more...

So to end my rant and ask a sensible question, will the onslaught of piles and piles of rubbish music EVER stop being released? And who, if anybody, can control these zero quality labels releasing crap tunes?

    /rant

I know where you are coming from mate,i tend to have a few fav labels in which i always look out for new releases, but in general you can spend a long time shifting through crap in order to get a decent tune.

its all to do with the fact that peple are djing with mp3s now instead of vinyl.
years ago for a track to get a release you needed the label to front money for the initial vinyl press, sleeve design etc.
but nowadays you can release everything for free so there is no dedicated quality control.you have to rely on labels who have high standards and artists who produce good tracks.
beatport is criticized for having '****E" on its site but they took steps in removing the labels who werent selling or just generally releasing crap but other sites like juno lets anyone who starts up a label(not that hard to do) release tracks on there site

On one side, I am totally down with everybody getting a shot and releasing a tune...it leaves room for new talent to shine through a lot easier.

    HOWEVER

This means any joe soap with a cracked copy of ableton / cubase / reason etc. can release yet another annoying track to sift through online.

Sticking to a trusted, quality label is definitely a good way to filter out the crap, however I think these big mp3 sites need to do more to sift out the rubbish.

Seannash: That's great news, I think Beatport have done a GREAT thing...I hope other sites follow their lead.

its a double edged sword but people seem to forget that there was tons of crap tunes released back in the vinyl days too.
many times ive gone record hunting in record shops and came away with nothing.

    .

this is the very point of labels in dance music. to act like a sh1tfilter. A label's success is largely determined by the consistency of it's output (in both style and quality).

I think a lot of people still need to get their heads around this fact.
I've spent time in the new releases sections on beatport. One of the crappest experiences you'll ever have.
However as Sean mentioned, same thing happened with vinyl (maybe to a lesser extent but at least these days it's a one-click affair to stop listening to a crap track as opposed to liftin the needle, gettin the sleeve, all that jazz).
