Final Year Grade; 3rd year grade?

I heard rumours that they changed the rules and that part of your 3rd year grade counts towards your final year grade (in BESS).

If this is true; I would be livid.

I know its always been the case for TSM. And always thought it was 100% for final year BESS.

    Can someone confirm/deny this?

I'm sure someone who knows specifically for BESS will come along and tell you in a bit but I can say that it's pretty common procedure. I don't think anyone I know has third year not go towards their degree. Usually it's ~20-50%.

I remember being told directly that BESS was an exception to this rule due to the high number of erasmus students.

    Nothing in the course handboook.

I also am curious about this. But typical BESS, know one seems to have a definate answer.

There is an external examiner for 3rd year BESS which means that it is a degree course year, but I have no idea how much it is worth.

Or, as you said, is there an exception because of the erasmus crowd. I certainly hope that 3rd year is not counted. Especially since erasmus is a big party year will 3rd year BESS in TCD was by far the hardest of all the years. I don't want to be punished for staying.

If they were going to change it, surely they would change inform students prior to their choosing to go on erasmus, or choosing their courses here. Well, that would be the sound thing to do. Oh and Alan Matthews probably would have mentioned it in his long email about the new terms structure for next year.

I never quite understood the rationale of JS BESS being 0% of our degree. I personally view it as the most important year, as it is with my third year result that I will be applying for a masters/job with, and so naturally enough I'm aiming for a first. If I do get a first in third year I wouldn't mind getting some credit, maybe 20% just to ease the pressure in 4th year. :o

    My 2c.

For me (graduated last year) JS was 0%.

Still I vivdly remember one of my JS lecturers saying JS is an exam year and papers are marked by an external examiner which is weird.

Agree though JS was by far the hardest year for me.

So by your understanding, JS is worth nothing to your final year grade, if thats the case, thank god for me!

Also, with regard to applying for a job (not masters) they don't check you grades. I did all the job applications this year, and they (PWC etc etc) don't ask for a transscript, they just ask you to fill your grades in on the online application. Like an idiot I gave them my real results, no job for me. But to my anger, a lot of people just lied, and assuming they get their 2.1 in final year so one is the wiser. They will ask for proof of your final year grades, but for anything before that, it appears to just operate on the honour system. Of course I'm not encouraging you not to study, do study, study study study!

Oh good, thats pretty much proof, JS didn't count last year, its not likely to count this year.

JS was hard wasn't it, and the for teh year after you it was six instead of five subjects. They promised a drop in work load, but the lecturers seemed happy to just teach the courses as they always had, no changes.

The 20/80 for JS/SS was implemented last year for CS but not for those already in 3rd or 4th year. That would be unfair...

    Aye.

I will be the first year doing C/CD/D engineering to have 20/80 marking.
