With so much variation, what tootpasete is the best, is an 89cent ownbrand toothpaste such as Boots just as good as a 4 Euro branded tootpaste.

    This is a good question.

All manufacturers claim their tooth paste is the best for various reasons. For a standard toothpaste where you have no specific problems with your teeth, own brand is probably just as good as long as you are brushing all your teeth (and all surfaces of them) properly. Your dentist or hygienist can advise what one would suit you best.

There are a few toothpastes that try to cure certain problems.
    1. Anti Sensitivity toothpaste - this stuff really does work, but I find the taste a bit off.
    2. Anti tartar - if you buildup a lot of tartar in a short period of time then this paste can slow the buildup.
    3. Remineralizing - if you have tooth erosion these may help harden your teeth.
    4. High fluoride - if you have a lot of dental decay/
    5. Medicated - for specific gum conditions.
    6. Whitening - usually contain abrasives and may not be for long term use.
    7. Herbal - these are OK but some do not contain fluoride, if your dentist specifically recommends a fluoride toothpaste these are not for you.

Mostly its about how you physically clean your teeth, the toothpaste had an important but secondary role.

Personally I use Fiacla cause its Irish. ;)
