    Folks,

Been doing some thinking and would like some advice. Currently drive a 1.9 07 Passat Comfortline. Its time to tax it and it comes to almost 600 for the year.

Now I was looking at changing to say a 08 Mondeo thats registered after July. It wouldnt cost me anything to change and Id seriously reduce my tax bill for the year.

But what are peoples opinions on the Mondeo Vs the Passat?

I'm sure if you had wanted a Mondeo back on 07 you would have bought one? I'm guessing you had/have a preference for the VW. Don't let the difference of a few hundred in road tax sway your decision on which car you'd rather be driving.

the Mondeo is sharper to drive alright, but I'd think seriously before changing.

Also, if a diesel Mondeo is registered before or after July, it won't make a difference to the road tax, it'll be on the lower rate regardless.

Hey Colm. To be honest I traded in an Astra for the Passat because the Astra was literally about to keel over and the Passat was a good deal at the time. To be honest its a lovely car to drive but the car tax is almost 3 times what youd pay for with the Mondeo. Ive never driven the Mondeo either so Im not sure which one is better.

Much as I don't particularly like VW's, I'd be reluctant to swap for a Mondeo as I can't get past the now dated styling and the abundance of shiny silver plastic in the interior (something which typical emperor's-new-clothes/sheep mentality motoring press never mention).

Colm, op is looking at a 08 Mondeo which is the new model not the old one. Interior of the new model Mondeo is on a par with the Passat but the current Passat interior imo is a shadow of quality on previous VW models.

OP I'm not sure by what you mean it would cost you nothing to go from a 07 Passat TDi to a 08 Mondeo. Unless you have a buyer lined up already for the Passat it will cost you a couple of grand to trade up at a garage as garages are not in the business of doing straight swaps. So if you think about it the cost to change expenditure will out weight the savings you make on motor tax.

Hi Bazz. Im actually going to talk to a sales guy over the weekend and get him to put a value on my car against a 08 Mondeo. I have sourced one already and its coming in at 20k. Looking online the 07 Passat Comfortline are coming in at something similar.
