Can someone explain to me how this works and if you can earn revenue from it.

So for instance if i had a company that say.........provided weather reports could i use twitter for this. So if you were based in the northwest could you request or subscribe to a weather report/forcast for that region from a twitter feed and be charged for the info??
Or would a simple txt based service be better for making revenue?

The weather idea was hypothetical but along similar lines to an idea i have.

Oh and if anyone is interested the weather is crap in the northwest today!!

No no no no no, Twitter is not about making money and you cannot make money from it in that way.

Twitter is about making relationships and micro blogging with like minded people. So many people in Ireland have no idea how to use it and just post random non-sense. Hell even the enterprise board sent a letter this morning suggesting people should twitter special offers - This is bad advice. Having a million followers doesn't do anything for you if noone reads your tweets.

If you want to make money through twitter get out there and develop relationships, add value and then have a service that people want and are willing to pay for.

Someone failed a urine test, to continues to keeping it going.

It has no business model, (possibly), it is hemorrhaging money and with no White Knight. It's text for grown ups at best and god know what at worst - bar a serious lack of cash, real cash.

Hitch your wagon to it now, next month etc… don’t rely on it for online marketing - its a "boo.com" in my mind.

it's purely for marketing - register your name for sure to sit on it if nothing else not to allow some other people to squat on it.
I do agree that it'll be overtaken by some other thing some day soon.

    agreed. i hate squatting-

but, but, i did like the Irish airline we love for their service, a smile and on board catering having their 'brand' taken and having to revert to silly stuff - on twitter.

Well done fancy dresser, love the link.

I know there are many that confuse being busy and active with new technologies with using it effectively (having a clear purpose and measurable outcomes). Have not found any business that I can see doing if effectively yet.

Well i don't think that's quite true either, most mobile networks have a twitter customer service account and a massive number of IT professionals share their knowledge on twitter - as a result get payable consulting jobs.

As i mentioned on a twitter thread before i've hired consultants, met suppliers, formed strategic alliances with other businesses all on twitter. All these things make money, but i'm not there shilling myself or services. I create relationships and in the business world thats always a good thing.

blue4ever - the business model does have a lot of potential, twitter is worth millions but the investors are in it for the long haul so they havent started to cash out yet. Eventually it will monetarise it's powerful core audience. Think about all the keyword rich text they have to geo, profile and target ads... Silicon Valley just works differently. It's not as easy as you think to trump twitter, google found that out with Jaiku.

    thanks for the replies guys

So i woujld imagine a standard txt info service would be the way forward if i want to get a return on it but could also use twitter for the marketting side of things?? Have i got that right??

Here's the thing Frag, Most people that use twitter properly already have 3g broadband on their phones so wouldn't require texts. Then people like yourself who don't quite understand twitter may follow you, but chances are they don't actually read their timeline and fewer still will convert to paying for a weather service. For example following 2,000 people may seem cool, but trust me really following 300 people and listening to them takes time.

To me this might not be a successful business strategy. The only thing i could paste twitter in your strategy is to offer free weather reports in the hope that some people might want them remotely and a fraction of your followers may sign up. Posting links to yourself will be like having a conversation with a wall.
