Help needed - Dell Inspiron

Hi, I have a dell inspiron 1720 about 15 months old running Windows Vista. When I switched it on today it said it was resuming Windows then screen went black. There is a cursor visible but nothing else. I've switched it on and off a few times but same thing every time.

When I was shutting it down last night it said it was installing updates but other than that it has been running perfectly.

Any suggestions or does it need a trip to Laptop Hospital? Thanks in advance.:)

Try booting it into safe mode, think its by tapping either F2 or F8 after you press power on.

If it loads in this you might be able to do a system restore back to before the update went on?...

    Good luck!

Thanks trumpette, it's alive again. Pressed F2 got into a blue screen with all the system details, didn't do anything else but it started working again when I came out of that. No need for safe mode.
A timely reminder to me to copy all my important files in case it happens again.
    Thanks

I wouldnt say having a look into the bios (all the system details) would have actually fixed anything- just good luck it started again. Deffo get a back up done now- In case it happens again!:p
