Looking to buy Volkswagen Passat - any help appreciated

    Hi All,

Am going to take a look at this car this evening. Any thoughts on anything I need to look out for on this model car, any known faults etc.

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volkswagen/Passat/1.9-TDI-/200917192606695/advert?channel=CARS

Also, from looking on Carzone, there are other Passats which are cheaper but have double the mileage or more so is this a fair price and realistically, what should I be looking to pay for it.

Last (but not least), anyone any good / bad experiences with Kingsley motors?

    Any help would be appreciated.

First thing I would ask the seller is if its a UK car? If it is then look for convincing evidence that the mileage is genuine.

It is a very basic model, manual rear windows, no climate, at a minimum I would advise looking for a Comfortline which is far better equipped.

2006 1.9Tdi Passats have the following known faults:
Fuel Pump packs in - subject to recall so make sure it's done
Injectors give up the ghost - not covered by VW
Dual Mass Fly Wheel falls apart - not covered by VW
Electric Hand Brake switch packs in - Switch generally covered by VW, but not labour
    Wishbones go
    Steering Control Column
    ECU

If there was one car I'd advise anyone to avoid, it's a 2006 Passat.

Passat of any year in my opinion. They are craptastic.

I'd take a look at the other Passat thread before parting with cash.

On the basis the Reg is 5463 I would imagine it is NOT a UK import. More than 5463 cars would have been registered in Cork in 2006 and if you buy a car in from the UK in 2007/8/9 then it would be the last number in the list. That a pretty early number.

Its the entry level car but still not a bad car for that money. Do check the car out for the classification of car.

In the UK they have the S line to R line and the Bluemotion.

Here we have the Comfortline, Sportline, Highline and Bluemotion.

This will tell you if it was a UK import if you can find this. Ask to see the original documentation. It should be a sticker in the manual just inside the front cover and possibly in the engine bay(open to correction).

Have to agree. Most unreliable car I've ever had.

    +1

    Not a great yoke

I know three people with Passats (1.6's), all three have been reliable enough but two of them just find it deathly dull to the extent of hating the car.

In the description in has 'front and rear electric windows', which it doesn't. Also double check if it has air con like it says because I dont think it does.

I was going to post that this is a paddy spec car until I notice it says it has aircon. That threw me off a bit. But judging from the interior and seats, it looks paddy spec. You would be better of dropping a year for a better spec. Same car, technology and prone to the same reliability issues at he end of the day.

    Hi,

Thanks for all the replies. Just wondering if I was to leave this car (going to go and take a look at it anyway), what car would you recommend?

    I suppose the criteria are

    Diesel preferable
    2.0L max
    2006 or newer
Saloon car of approx Passat size
    Max price €12,000

It's Baseline Spec - the only B7 Irish Passat spec to come with Air Conditioning instead of Climate Control. Also means there is no chrome around the windows on the outside.

I'd say a Comfortline should be acheivable at that price for that mileage.

You'd get that for less than €12,000.

Or an 06 or 07 run out model of the old shape Mondeo - needs to be 115ps at least as the 90ps engine is a bit of a dog.

Just seen this one for similar price / mileage. What are peoples thoughts?

    Good car and good price.

Import? In relation to reffering to Miles on the clock and MPH.

OP did specifically mentions diesel though.

OP would you consider a Mondeo:

    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=1381242

Pretty rare high spec Ghia model with a superior engine and should be bought close to your budget on a straight deal.

Not a bad looking car. What are peoples experiences with these? Are the running costs high?

Would also consider a Skoda. Are they a better car than the Volkswagen or is it just down to the fact that they are generally cheaper than the equivalent Passat that they are popular?
Is the Superb the best model to go for in this range?

Mondeo is a lovely car to drive, running costs are generally lower than a Passat and the Ghia 130ps models are rare and well specced.

Despite sharing a lot of parts with the Passat, the Superb's don't seem to share as many niggles. You don't see that many Superb's compared to the Octavia's, a lot of people were put off by the badge but it is a lot of car for the money (just make sure it wasn't previously a taxi)

That mondeo is overpriced, you would bring a 07 one old shape from UK for that. I have a Nov 2003 (same facelift as the one in pic) 130 BHP Ghia X, Leather and 17 inch alloys..sony stereo..its a way superior car to any of the passats around me..and their owners would agree. offer that guy 10 for that Mondeo...take or leave it price..see what he says...i was offered 5 off a garrage for mine in a trade in with 90k miles...id be better off giving it to charity..and going straight deal in this climate.
Mondeos are easy to self service. Good owners forums and, you have similar issues. I had to get my injectors re coded once, but i think it was down to fact i added a diesel additive to fuel..it happened after that....u get reports of dual mass flywheel failure..but i think tahts common in all modern day diesles..i see toyotas and VWS reporting this. EGR valve can be cleaned.....its a good idea to do it. Easy enough urself.

    Folks,

I was looking at changing my 07 Passat Comfortline to something like this:
    http://www.motorpark.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=1359781

Tax is cheaper and to be honest it looks a little better than the Passat.
