Ok I looked up old posts on this but some are from 2006 so wanted some fresh info. Sorry I know it's a tired topic :o.
What is the story with interrailing? Do you buy a ticket and go where you want? Do you have to get trains from specific stations and specific times or are you free to move about when you want?
Also, is it fairly common and safe to travel alone?
    thanks :)

you can buy a ticket for a different amount of days like a 22 day ticket or less. go to USIT on the quays in Dublin or there's several around the country, just look them up. you pay for whatever ticket you want and they ask you what date you want to start your ticket on so you're able to travel on the trains from that date onwards. which is why i recommend landing in your start destination a few days before it starts to have a few extra days. basically you get travel on the majority of trains within europe except teh likes of subways and trams etc. some trains require a reservation beforehand which costs a few euro but the ticket covers the rest. just ask in the train station they usually speak english. also there's some high speed trains in Germany which aren't covered.
