Creative Altering of Election Posters - Criminal Damage?

I've head conflicting opinions on whether altering/defacing election posters is considered criminal damage and whether removing them completely is theft.

I personally consider them nothing but litter so fail to see how this could be true.

I know someone is unlikely to be prosecuted for such an offense but does anyone have the official word on this?

    no reason...

I've never heard of a prosecution, but I've always heard that defacing or removing a political candidate's posters is illegal. If I had my way however, I'd burn every one of them.

They're someone else's property so yes.

There's a recent thread about this.
