Hello - i've been toying with the idea of trying to start my own night in galway, or just getting a night somewhere.playing a blend of house, techno, trance etc - Problem is that most clubs wont really give you a chance unless you have a following - im not long back from Canada - so i dont really know many people in galway , so its a kinda catch 22.
Also anybody know what the dance scene is like in Galway or Ireland now? HAs it died a slow death? Id love to do a late 1990's/early 2000's theme nigth - i think those were the halycon years :) Anybody any thoughts? Or anybody thinking along the same lines? Appreciate the feedback - thanks AA

    Here's my two cents.
There aren't a lot of clubs really that will do a full dance night and the DJ's that are resident don't really want to give up the nights they worked hard to get (In most cases).
There is a strong population of dance fans out there to try and get a night going somewhere other than a club initially, such as a decent pub...however...a lot of the pubs are still owned by old gits who consider all electronic music as drugs related.
Pubs are losing loads of cash as people just would rather drink at home so as the older publicans die or have to sell their licenses due to falling crowds there will hopefully be plenty of opportunities for dance nights as younger publicans take over.

As an example I played a party down the west last year. We packed the place and drink was flying. The owner warned us that the music would make her regulars leave. Apart from the big crowd we had with us the only regulars were three auld lads sat at the counter who were cross-eyed looking at all the girls in skirts.
At the end of the night one of the bar men told me it had benn their busiest night in 6 months and that they almost ran out of beer near the end....but the owner told us we wouldn't be able to have any more nights because her regulars thought it was too loud.
This is the mentality you have to deal with. Best of luck man.

where in the weekend wud u fit in a night in the deeper cellar...that seems to be fairly locked down by one crowd of djs

i suggest u try to make a fan base by the means of secret sundaze events...
just need to find some willing venues and good crowd
check them out on myspace i think there a great idea and its more about the party than the profit

Great idea OP. There is definitely a market especially as Galway has become so predictable & dull. There are a certain batch of tunes that are total classics which is born out by their constant remixes. No matter whether its Ibiza or Galway these tracks are floor fillers. At the end of the day clubs are struggling & if you can fill a night better that the resident "DJ" then market it.
Offer to do it for a percentage of the door & then promote like hell.

Maybe steal from the TV shows & compilation albums - The Best Dance Night Ever or 100 Top Dance Tracks. If you get no joy with the normal clubs then maybe a hotel might be interested. There is always the beach !.

How's the old Aras down on Dominic Street doing these days?

They used to be pretty open minded about what was going on musically, and there was always an appetite for something different. You usually had djs playing at weekends.

De Burgos was another place that used to promote club nights and they got good crowds in for it too - initially it was free in and then they started charging 10 euro.

I haven't been in Galway for ages, but I'd agree that the nightlife was becoming dull. Compared to the legacy of the GPO and Boogaloo nights and whatever else I missed. Kids these days would listen to anything, hah?
