No. Lowry didnt play the tournament for the money so why should another golfer give him some. If he had finihed 50th this question wouldnt be asked.

Was talking about this myself the other day, I'd buy him a nice car worth €50k or give him €50k cash

I thought the prize money for first was split among all prize winners?

    why would he?

Robert rock is a journeyman pro, played in over 140 tournaments and up until last week the most he had won in one event was just under 100k. Ok, he now has half a mill, but he doesn;t have a two year exemption and his ability to pull in new sponsers has hardly increased. I wouldn't have thought he was extremely wealthy and that 500k will be very welcome to him.

On the otherhand, lowry has won no money, but he has a two year exemption, is a lot younger and has massive potential. Once he turns pro there will be alot of money from sponsers on the table and i'd nearly go as far as saying that by this time next year Lowry will be worth more than Rock...

As a number that seems a lot, but he's been on tour since 2003. Take away last weeks earnings that gives 1.2million over 6 years is 200k a year. With the amount of travelling those guys have to do and other costs its hardly big money. I'm not saying he is poor but i dont think he can afford to be handing out 30/40k to another golfer...

Those career earnings just count his prize money though. No doubt he makes money from sponsors too which should bring him up to a comfortable income.

    1.7m isn't a comfortable income?!?

As Paul said, before last week he didn't have a big income... 200k a year might seem like a lot but when you take out costs like paying his caddy, manager, mega-travel etc...
Plus you have to factor in the likelihood of losing your card and what that can do to your earning potential.

Don't mean to come over all Gandhi, but one thing i would like to see if Lowry does go pro and earns a good few quid is him gifting a bit of money back to the GUI to help those other young lads hoping to make the breakthrough. He's benfitted nicely from grants etc from the GUI so would be nice to see.

Was a strange situation all right, Rock couldnt really lose once he got into the play off. Win win scenarion for him really. I would say Lowry will be makin plenty of dough soon enough anyway, not pickin up this cheque wont bother him too much!

No, Lowry was still an amateur so shouldn't get any prize money. Even if Tiger came second and got the 500k it wouldn't be his place to offer some of it to Lowry.

The issue for me is whether the runner-up should be given the winner's cheque. They discussed this on Golf Night and one suggestion was that in future an amateur winner could choose a charity to give the money to which I thought was a decent idea.

Definitely not for all the reasons already outlined.

Plus it's not just Rock who benefitted. Every golfer who made the cut got more as a result of Lowry winning. Should they all have a whip around for Lowry? Not a chance!

I have to say that if it was me I would definitely give a token gift of some sort, but not cash.

I'm tempted to say a framed copy of my 500k cheque but that would be evil. :p

Win win scenarion for him really.
Have to disagree with this, he wanted to win the trophy, he didnt want to win the money without the trophy. Otherwise you could say that Lowry couldnt lose as he could never win the money. Its all about being first for the pros. (unless its the last comp and you need 20k to keep your card :D)

If I was Rock, I'd probably have quietly offered Lowry a quarter of a million on the 73rd tee to take a dive in the playoff! ;)
