Permanet Blocking Sites?

Okay I've searched and can't find definitive answer here so apologies in advance if this has already been dealt with.

I've been trying to connect to Demonoid all morning with no luck. Tried two different browsers and neither will open demonoid.com for me. However when I go through a proxy I have no problem connecting.

So my question is this: Is Permanet blocking my access to Demonoid?

Did you ask Permanet? They would know.

    update:

on the advice of a tech friend i've flushed the DNS, reset the modem etc. It didn't work.

ping cmd returns: ping request could not find host demonoid. please check the name and try again.

Also, if I put IP Address directly into the address bar I can connect.

I want to be sure it's not some stupid thing I could've fixed myself before I email them (to spare my blushes ;) )

Do an nslookup on demonoid and see what your DNS server responds. If Permanet are blocking on their DNS server, then switch to a DNS service such as OpenDNS.

Did the nslookup and it returned:

    server: demonoid.com
    address: 208xxxxxxxxx
    DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds.
    ***request to demonoid.com timed-out

No issues connecting to sites like piratebay or mininova so I'll use proxy for Demonoid for now (easiest thing for me to manage). Will email Permanet.

what DNS servers are you using, just the permanet ones, or something else?

if you can get to it's IP address but not the hostname then it's almost certainly a DNS issue.

try changing the DNS settings in your modem/router to something other than your ISP's DNS and see how it goes.

A lot of people here would use the DNBS provided by either opendns.com or level3.

the opendns dns servers are listed in the bottom corner of their website and the level3 dns servers go from 4.2.2.1 to 4.2.2.6 (just use any 2 or 3 of them).

if you already have dns servers manually listed in your modem/router, you might want to make a note of them so you can change them back if you want to at a later date.

Please don't link directly to torrent sites, as it's against the rules. URLs have been removed from the posts. Remember that VBulletin automatically parses URLs, so just remove the www or .com when typing the name.

Perma use Level3 for all traffic and backhaul so they probably already use Level3 DNS

    interesting, didn't know that.

i don't recall ever havin any issues with that particular site though and i use level3's dns myself (on UPC). maybe they have a blacklist on top of it if they do use their dns.

I'm not saying they do it and not saying its the problem here but its easy for an ISP to steer all your DNS traffic to any other DNS server they want.

Idea : Suppose some tech gets pissed off with receiving loads of calls from people using all sorts of DNS servers . Decides steer all DNS requests to their own DNS server.
Then their DNS fails on a few sites , they may not notice until someone tells them

... or, you can just add that IP address to your "hosts" file and you'll be fine!!! ;)

until they decide to move to a different host and change their IP address. :)

he could also just change his bookmark temporarily to point to it's IP address instead of hostname and if that stops working just change back to their domain name again and hopefully by then it'll be working for him.

a place i used to work used to block a lot of websites, but it was very poorly implemented and everyone in the office just used to set up dyndns redirects to their favourite sites to get around it. worked a treat too. :)

I use permanet and I have no issues with any sites. From one PC I use OpenDNS and a work DNS from another and all works ok. Maybe there was an issue with the A-record or an unrelated DNS propogation issue. If I were an ISP, it would make more sense to block torrent traffic rather than block access to a torrent tracker.... But I am not an ISP.....
