    Thanks

Not in Waterford, but iv passed a few laptops to a business in kilkenny. They can be costly to repair. Its a specialist repair that your average repair guy can't do.

    Hey,

This happened to my girlfriend's laptop last year and I spoke to Marcus from Munster IT services. He basically said that for the price you'd pay to get a screen replaced, you'd nearly get a new one. So unless it's a particularly expensive model or something, I'd say you're looking at the same situation.

Depends on the damage, but more or less! He will need it brought to an IT shop to recover the data from the drive to the new laptop if that's the final solution!

"Lets Talk About Computers" on the Airport Business Park specialise in this kind of stuff (recovery + replacing parts), around €65 + VAT per hour I think, which as someone already mentioned, makes laptops hardly worth repairing

Particually seeing as its a Dell laptop Parts might be very hard to come by for repair. I know it was that way with printers anyway but this maybe a different ball game.

The model is only about 6 months old, Dell Inspiron 1525. Sickened now I have to say-I've become quite fond of her!

We'll see does the aul home contents insurance cover it.

There not "Dell parts" as such. There usually from a well known brand. Dell do exactly what I do - buy the parts, build the machine to the customers spec. Slight differences of course, but in theory, that's whats done. So you should not have any problems finding parts.

Dell might do the repair job at a better rate seeing as its fairly new. If you want me to take a look, I can see about getting a repair quote for you.

I stand corrected, I just know from experience in my former line of work the printer consumables and the like can be fairly hard to come by from Dell.

OP, Could you not just get A cable to hook it up to your TV and run it that way?

Sure I'm using it now. Its usable but a bit annoying.

Doing a bit of research later when I wip out the insurance policies, I might get cover for a new one!

Is there any sort of protector you can get to give the screen a bit more protection? Its easily enough to crack it if you get unlucky.

well if you've currently got some semblance of a display then if you've not done so already now is the time to do a full backup.

Beyond that, new lappies are cheap and you get an upgrade into the bargain. Many years ago in a former life as an I.T. consultant I specified (but wanted nothing to do with supply) lappies to some docs out in the hospital and Toshiba came out on top as a brand you'd find it easiest to obtain replacement screens for in most developed countries. Some of them had a habit of dropping the lappy onto the airport floor while jetlagged and stuff.

not saying if that's still the case and I've nothing to do with IT equipment supply so aint selling anything to anyone.

If you buy a new laptop - you get a hard drive with it. New. To replace it, would be a waste. To get rid of the old one, would be a waste also. Either way, your loosing a perfectly good drive.

OP: Send me on the make and model via PM, along with a picture/detail of the problem. Ill get in touch with the crowd in Kilkenny and ask them for a quote. A client of mine was getting a Packard Bell Inverter Board for around €200 so yours could come in around the same.

I know you asked about Waterford but these guys replace Dell screens (15") for €135, or buy the screen for €125

    OP,

They're handy to replace. If you need more than two screwdrivers I'd be surprised. Just make sure you get the right screen for your particular laptop (some of the inverters can vary from model to model).

I've done quite a few from Dell and Apple and if you take it handy and follow the plentiful online guides you shouldn't go too far wrong. I don't have the link to the place I got the screens from in the States but that ccity place looks ok, give em a ring and see if they can sort you.

Apple were looking for €600 to replace the last mac book screen we sent them so I swapped it out myself for the grand total of €115 for parts plus shipping.

Best of luck with it whatever you end up doing.
    R.

From looking at the website, they don't cover that. They would do a lot of what we do ourselves.

not directly mentioned on the site, true.
but on http://itservices.ie/repair.htm it does mention
Everyone that has used a computer on a regular basis knows that they are far from perfect, and occasionally components need to be repaired or replaced.

but this is the ad in WT which does mention it

That makes more sense. I assume that website is very out dated then :)

Most Waterford IT company's do that btw. :)

For what its worth, I got a decent enough quote for the repair for the OP - €160 (incl. call out charge, parts, repair etc). Though im not sure what the OP has decided to do :)
