Looking for a tractor to cover general tasks on 20 acres. Have a max of 5k to spend though less is better.

Two have my eye: a tidy '84 Landini 5830 (based on the MF 240 I am told) and a Ford 4600.

I have looked at a number of others, mostly cheaper MF 165s, a 70s John Deere, Zetor 8011. Zetor is tidy, MFs were asking around 2k but were roughish and the JD looked good but I have been warned of parts costs.

All things being equal in terms of condition what are the recommendations? The Ford is most expensive BTW.

    The 8340 looks cheap.

As regards the 4600, I have three (as well as a 4000 and 550 digger with a 4610 engine). The 3 cylinder is a great engine, although a little thirsty for its size. Very easy to start though, and reliable!

Years ago I worked for a contractor driving a 4600 during the summer pulling a wrapper and stacking bales, In winter it fed the cattle and scraped the yards. It basically never stopped and never let us down. Creature comforts weren't high but if you want a tough dependable tractor thats easily maintained yourself the 46 is hard to beat. It's also very basic so any repairs can be carried out your self. We could fit a new clutch in her in half a day and I think an altenator had to be replaced in the 5 yrs i drove it as well. Not bad for a machine that was working 80-90% of the year

    I went for the 4600.
Some real value for money in those linked tractors... but I don't need a big 4WD machine. Most of what I do is around the yard, garden and bog. Nimble is what I need. It replaces a MF 35, just to give some context.
