Running Advice? A few questions?

    Some background...I'm 35, 6ft tall, and weight around 200lbs. (14st 4lbs). Definitely a bit heavy for running, but I'm working on it! I've set a target of 190lbs asap, and aim and keep it there.

    Anyway, I have tried to improve my running over the past 2 years but when I put in a lot of miles I just get shin splints, and then I'm out again for a while ( I keep cycling & swimming).

    I have had the gait test done. All my current running shoes have under 150Kms on them. So I think I can rule out the shoes.

    I've was never a runner growing up, the water was always my thing.

    Any idea why I keep getting shin splints? and any advice on how to treat them, and avoid them?

    I plan on doing a half marathon in late June. Can you keep running/training with shin splints?

    Hi Bagus, there ought to be a sticky on shin splints! It's one of the most common conditions, especially with newer runners. No medical advice here but

    1. I don't think it's wise to grin and bear this condition. You need to rest and ice - but continue to cross-train.
    2. When you start running gain, do so with care. Don't charge off on a 10-miler and put yourself back to square one.
    3. Look up one or two exercises you can be doing to avoid a re-occurrence.
