Tom Croft replaces Quinlan on Lions tour

No real surprise here, after Quinlan's appeal was tonight rejected at the hearing in Scotland.
Tom Croft has been called into the British and Irish Lions squad after Alan Quinlan failed with an appeal against a 12-week suspension. Munster back-row forward Quinlan was banned for making contact with the eye area of Leinster captain Leo Cullen in the Heineken Cup semi-final on May 2.

Lions coach Ian McGeechan telephoned Croft this evening and also contacted England manager Martin Johnson.

Lions manager Gerald Davies said: 'As a result of the appeal panel's decision this afternoon, Ian and the management team have selected Tom Croft to replace Alan Quinlan.'

The Lions management will make a decision tomorrow on a replacement for Leigh Halfpenny, who will remain in Cardiff for treatment on a thigh injury.

In fairness Croft's form over the 6 nations was such that he deserved a place in Squad.

I'm gutted that Quinlan misses out but for a player on form and as athletic as Croft it, I think anyway, strengthens the Lions squad.

It's obviously just me which thinks this, but ..

Quinlan was picked for a reason and, for that reason, Croft is not a like for like replacement. I would have thought that, applying the rationale that got Quinlan selected in the first place, that Leamy would have been a better match to replace him.

Croft is a good player, but if I had Burger / Smith / Spies running at me, I'd hide behind Leamy before Croft every time ;)

Leamy has done nothing to deserve to be called up. I don't even see how he would be a like for like comparison, he's a pretty different player to Quinlan too. I don't think there was an obviously similar type of player available, so they simply went for the next best player.

This is ONE of the reasons why Leamy & Quinlan would come in handy. To go toe-to-toe with the biggers Boks when they pick on the smaller Lions. DOC is going to be very busy!

There's no real shortage of big men going out with the Lions. Leamy would have had a very good shot of going if he hadn't been out injured so long, but unfortunately them's the breaks. He hasn't really shown the form since coming back that would get him on the trip, looks to still lack a bit of match fitness.

I agree, although I don't think politically Leamy could have been picked, nor perhaps on form/fitness does he deserve to be.

Disappointed for Quinlan, he deserved better. Quinlan would run through a brick wall for you, as would Leamy. That's why Quinlan was picked by the wily old fox. Croft won't give you that.
