Cable box outside house.

    Hiya,

Some so and so has decided to nick the door off the tv cable box on the outside of the house, leaving the box hanging out and damaged.

Tried Woodies, B&Q etc to get one, but no luck.

It's a white plastic enclosure with a door and a little hex key lock that sits almost flush recessed into the wall. It's about 22cm wide, 13cm deep and 30cm high.

Would anybody either know where I can buy one or what criteria I should use to find one on the net (make, model, correct technical name etc) ?

    Many thanks,

    Klaatu.

    Contact UPC, they might know?

These things are fitted by builders, so you wont get one in a DIY shop. Try your nearest Builders' Providers, such as Brooks

I had the same thing happen, except I think mine just came loose and blew away in a gale rather than being nicked. I ended up cutting a piece of plywood to fit the hole, and fixing it with two self tapping crews, screwing into the plastic surround. It's not pretty, but it ain't going anywhere soon :)

If it's anything like mine - the builders didn't fit it right - meaning the door doesn't close propely - meaning it opens & falls off in a strong wind. Mine did that for years until I removed the cementy stuff from the spot the lock bit is supposed to engage.

I think this might be suited in DIY forum, so moving it there.

I'd guess the box you refer to is like a miniature ESB meter box, and is often used for eircom cables too. Electrical supplies or builder merchant would have them I'd say.

I think they do have them, but I think you have to buy the whole thing, not just the door. My solution cost me exactly €0 since I already had the plywood :)

Would these boxes not be the providors responsibility?
Surly if it were the ESB box the supplier would have to make it safe etc..

Good question. I'm not sure tbh. One of the hinges is broken on my ESB box atm, but it still closes. Just doesn't open well :)

I reckoned that the meter reader opened it, and didn't close it properly, so a gust fo wind will fling it open and break the rubbish door hinge.

The operator (eircom, upc, esb, gas) might charge you for damage of course.

I could be wrong but with the ESB I think it is in T&Cs that the metre etc remains the property of the ESB. It would then be their responsibility..
As is all the service points outside your gate.

Try chadwicks or brooksthomas in sandyford or nass road - if not try electrical suppliers like o'reillys.

I got a callout to a house once because the boiler wasn't working, realised straight away there was no gas and went to check the meter wasn't turned off, opened the meter box to find the meter had been stolen. I guess someone took it to swap over with their own meter for part of the time between meter readings to save money.

If you missing a door only then your lucky. The builder supplies and fits the boxes on new builds so that makes the house holder responsable for the box and not the contents ie: meters.

The builder supplied a man hole on my property that services drainage along the road.
By your logic am I responsible for that????

If you want to do a bit of DIY dont go to places like that. I have seen electrical equipment at 5 and 6 times the price you would pay at a good electrical wholesalers. The same goes for wood, insulation material, plaster board etc. go to a good builers providers.
These places just rip you off and sell 90% rubbish.

Anyway back to the OPs question: The box you are referring to is called an "ETU" box. A builder providers will sell you one. They are quite cheap, but you will have to buy the entire unit just to get the door! Try Chadwicks they will have lots of them.

BTW Chadwicks own Woddies and sell most of the same stuff at about 1/3 of the price!

No, this is not the case I can assure you.

Funnilly enough I got talking to someone on the road today who had a problem with their ESB box lid broken a few weeks back. He rang the ESB to enquire where to get a replacement. They said this was a very dangerous situation & had someone out to replace it within the hour.
:confused:Not like the ESB to go out of their way for something that is not ther problem:confused:

Sorry to dig up an old thread. But does anyone know where to get the doors for the small eircom/UPC enclosures fitted to houses?

I got one in Chadwicks building suppliers a couple of years ago. I could get just the door, and didn't have to buy the whole unit as mentioned by someone earlier in the thread.
