I'm surprised there hasn't been a thread on this yet - oh well. The IFI is screening 2001 in a 70mm print this week, so if you haven't had your head bent by 2001 yet, here's your chance. One screening tonight, two screenings tomorrow, and Keir Dullea (Dave Bowman) will be popping in to the last screening (6:15 Thursday) to say a few words. (link)

(I have no connection with the IFI: I just think this is a Big Deal, though I wish they weren't charging €12/€10 to see it.)

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

They are in the middle of a Kubrick Season. I watched A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon and Full Metal Jacket in the last couple of weeks there. The Shining is on this weekend too. Hoping to get to this tonight or tomorrow.

Can somebody explain why a 70mm showing is more expensive?

Intend on going to see this tomorrow - is the one film I've always wanted to see on the big screen. Cost is a bit scabby, but it is a great opportunity.

Saw it there yesterday. Got in for a tenner with a student discount. I didn't view it as too much to pay considering I'd always wanted to see it on the big screen.
It was overwhelming in parts. The opening title screen with Thus Spake Zarathustra booming all around was pretty awesome. Loads of little details that aren't visible on tv screens are easily apparent on the big screen.
    The Stargate section... woah...
Generally speaking the print is good, a bit blotchy sometimes and theres some sound interference for about 10 minutes. Which is a shame because ,other than that, the sound is beyond words.
I'd recommend it if you are a massive fan of the film, you owe to yourself. Casual fans mightn't get as much out of it. As for first time viewers,... lucky bastards

I think the 70mm price is worth it tbh.

I went to see Larry of Arabia last year and it looked stunning (only way to see that film imo). If the 2001 print is anything like it its worth it.

I got to it last night. Stunningly beautiful but the print wasn't pristine. The annoying click click when there was supposed to be absolute silence was a shame. Last showing is today if anybody else is tempted to go.

Brilliant experience alright, but that clicking interference was annoying - and shame it was at a part of complete silence. But seeing it as it was meant to be seen is definitely a fantastic cinematic experience - the overwhelming sound and beautiful cinematography definitely confirm this as one of the most wonderfully composed films ever made. Daisy, daisy.... :(

Saw the last showing of it earlier this evening. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.

Having Keir Dullea saying a few words at the start was such a great way to warm up. Hearing the music and seeing the images on the big screen was something i thought i'd never see.

    Worth every cent.

It's staggering to believe that this film is 41 years old! Despite being before my time, I would imagine it was light years ahead of itself in terms of visuals.
