Information to help repair bike

Had been considering a new bike but the threat of the big unspeakable 'R' word has persuaded me to repair. I pulled out my 11 year old mountain bike onto which I had added road wheels and thought this will do nicely for my commute and allow me to leave my newer MTB for just that...mountain biking.

I would like to repair my old bike but don;t know where to start. Would I be better off just dropping it to the bike shop? Things like brakes I could manage myself but when I try to increase peddling speed the chain starts to slip. Also, I can't change through all the gears. So I'm wondering, is there a problem wiht the chain (too big) or are the gear cogs worn and so need replacing and if so, are these big jobs for a ham fisted yet enthusically semi technical person.
I realise I'm relying on long distance diagnosis but is there any way to check the cause of the above mentioned gear/chain problem..are there good repair books out there?
    thanks
    pab
