I am going to buy my first car,,,,
I have my eye on the 00 model polo..
I am going to look at one today or tomorrow and is priced at 2000 privatly..
However everyone is sayin that is too overpriced for a oo polo with no electric windows or central locking..?? Ideally i would pay 1600 for it.?!Would you say i could talk him down??
OR where would i get a decent car for 2000ish???

    Please help!!!

Presuming it's a 1 litre. You will find very few older shape Polo's with electric windows or central locking and if they do they tend to be 1.4's and often imports.

If the car is NCT'd, serviced and doesn't need anything doing to it you could do a lot worse. If you got it for 1600 I would consider it decent enough value. Do you have a link to it?

Em it was on carzone but was taken off it yesterday...
Yes it is the 1 litre...
Ideally i would be paying the 1600.. because if i talk it down to this i think i may cover my insurance under my mother for the year with the money that i do have...
I know its not enough details really... and what would you look out for in it.. As i am going up with my brother and he doesn't really know much about cars either....

It would be a good idea to get a person who knows a bit about cars to go with you to have a look, even for taking it for a test drive you need someone who is used to driving to check it out for you!!The price dosent seem to bad though for a 00, i would try to get a few hundred off though if you can. :D

    What mileage is on it?
    When was it last serviced?
How long is the NCT for?
If it needs one will the owner put it through as a condition of sale (they can be done up to 3 months before they are due)?
    Are the tyres ok?
When is the tax up? If it's out I'd be making sure you weren't caught for back tax.
How does it drive? changing gears cleanly? Clutch ok? Braking in a straight line? Steering pulling to any side? Any strange noises?
Signs of accident damage? Ask owner straight out.

These are the kinda things I'd be looking for, if you or your brother dont know much about cars maybe a friendly local mechanic to give it the once over.

Also, I'm sure someone here knows for sure, but if it has a timing belt is this due replacement anytime soon?

I have heard that Used Cars NI are pretty good. They have lots of second hand cars very cheap

But the cars are up the North and you'll have VRT to contend with. On cheaper cars it could wind up costing you as much. Savings are better the more expensive the car generally

Em it has 66000 miles... which is really good for a 00 and i know that..
Nct isnt in January and tax is til the start of july..
I just dont want to rush into it...

Don't know where you are but steer clear of travelling to the north for first/cheap cars.
My advice is stay as local as possible, garage/mechanic are good for piece of mind/support.

But you can't go to far wrong with a polo. And EPM is asking all the right questions

You'd be surprised, you can still save on low end cars especially because of the sterling being so bad. They also have a VRT estimator to work out what it would cost to bring down.

I guess so. I only say that as I was looking myself and couldn't believe what your money can get at the moment

Don't be foolish and pay garage prices. At this age and price just get a mechanic to give it a good looking over - if it's a dog move on but it could equally be a peach. Most garages will probably only give a 3 month warranty on that age of car so a grand for 3 months warranty is not worth it. The 1k should cover any problems easily *if* they were to happen

Just remember first impressions count with cars, if the seats ar torn, the body work scraped and if it looks like its been abused then it generally has been.

Remember theres plenty of good cars for 1.6k out there.....
