Biz Development in these times

    Hi All,

My company, mainly a hr/business consultancy has been really successful over the last number of years. Unfortunately we're now starting to feel the pain. I have 5 permanent employees and it hasn't got to the point where I need to start letting them go yet but all the indicators are there.

We need to start engaging in some business development but I don't want to go down the route of cold calling random companies as I think this could damage our reputation in the long term. Does anyone have any ideas on where to start?

Are you a memebr of any networking gorups such as BNI. I am a memebr of a BNI Chapter with 30+ members and what our most successful networkers do is they stand up each week and ask for a particular referral i.e. I would like an intorduction to Joe Bloggs in Joe Bloggs ltd. It works extremely well and cuts out the cold call aspect as you are intorduced to the person by the referrer.

    Worth a try

There is something ironic about an OP whose line of work is ''business consultancy'' looking for ideas on business development..

Nevertheless - you might start with your five employees - a brainstorming session might turn up ways to develop that hadn't previously occurred to you.

Beyond that, making suggestions is a bit difficult - the description 'hr/business consultancy'' doesn't tell us much - are you a recruitment agency, do you specialise in a particular area of consultancy, is there an online angle to your present business ??? etc... - a bit of detail might help to focus thoughts.

Given the recession, i would need to be particularly convinced of the value added by any kind of consultants, especially given the font of knowledge that is available for free, the existence of mentors etc etc...

I presume due to your years in the business and the amount of staff you have , that you have put together a fairly decent sized client list. Maybe start with going through your list and seeing how to increase revenue with your existing client base.

Look at developing your online presence. You might need to think about a new service offering that flows with the recession. I have noticed that a lot of people are on 2 and 3 day weeks right now. I wonder if there are any opportunities for businesses to pool employees.

Maybe hosting a seminar on a topic thats relevant to a lot of business these days eg "How to keep your employees happy when pay cuts are on the line" or "Staff development in a recession" or how to retain your best employees ... an article in the Observer at the weekend discussed how banks that are in trouble (through nationalisation) are losing their best employees to banks that are not government backed.

A seminar wouldn't cost much to host and could get you a lot of leads.
