ASH carry out their 'no more albums' promise

I remember much guffawing at the time when Ash announced they would no longer release albums... It seems they will now release 26 singles over the course of a year!

    From ash-official.com:

With 18 Top 40 hits, Ash are one of the most successful ‘singles bands’ of recent times, consistently bothering our charts and airwaves with their distinctive, lovable and inventive pop.

In 2007 Ash released the album Twilight Of The Innocents, bequeathed another brace of hit singles You Can’t Have It All and Polaris, before promptly announcing they would no longer release albums in a traditional way. Heralding a new approach to record releases, the ultimate singles band will now deliver the ultimate singles collection – a year long series of fortnightly single releases, with limited edition collectors vinyl.

For the past year they have been holed up in their New York HQ, Atomic Heart Studios, writing and recording a series of songs that will form the “A-Z series”. From September, each fortnight for the next twelve months, Ash will release a single on limited 7” vinyl and digital download... Commencing with ‘A’ and running through the alphabet, all 26 songs will be released on Ash’s own Atomic Heart Records and will be available through shops and by subscription through the band’s website www.ash-official.com.

To kick off this series, Ash will be releasing a Mark Hamilton penned song RETURN OF WHITE RABBIT. Fans will be able to download this song free of charge from the Ash website www.ash-official.com from May 18, and 1000 limited 7” will be made available to buy through mail order and selected independent record shops from June 8.

New single RETURN OF WHITE RABBIT sees the band throwing angular guitars over electro hooks and growling bass, in a febrile departure from their recent output. Created with resident engineer Claudius Mittendorfer, this is an urgent and liberating take on classic heart-tugging Ash, indicative of the darker electronic influence across the forthcoming A-Z songs.

hear hear, so instead of bothering people once or twice a year with an album or single, it'll be every couple of weeks with a single. Great news for the world of musak indeed.

God, I hate Tim Wheeler's voice.

Best thing ever to come out of Ash was Charlotte Hatherley's first solo record.

I haven't been bothered with Ash for ages, but I nabbed this single regardless. I can't stop listening to the bloody thing. The Rapture-like angular guitars, the throbbing bass, the hypnotics synths. It's not brilliant, just really infectious. It's nice to take a break from some of the more pretentious stuff I often lend my ears to and listen to this unashamed piece of pop.

~Listening to a new offering every two weeks from that whiney little geek? Who told him he could sing?
And anyway, i bet all these singles will be put together in a years time and you can purchase the "singles collection"... eg AN ALBUM
    booooo down with super-mediocre rock!!
I know that was an oxymoron

I like Ash. They may not be by any means the best band musically and some members talent levels are highly questionable but i'd compare them to your best friend's band who although they aren't the best, can turn out a brilliant song every now and then and you like to see them do well.
The last album really grew on me, mainly through throwing it on my mp3 player and listening to songs when they came on randomly.
1977 on the other hand is a fücking brilliant album which I still listen to regularly.

Am I missing something or does "return" begin with the letter 'r'?

Sshhhsshh..sh*t up man...They might release like 15 more or whatever if they realise..

The sooner they go the extra mile, and decide on a "no more music" policy, the better..

    ash suck donkeyballs..

    They're very out-of-date if they're going for a The Rapture rip-off.

Ash were class - Albums like '1977' and 'Free All Angel's were soundtracks to my teenage summer years

    *sighs*

I like Ash. they're not **** like some people are saying anyway.

Yeah, what the hell! The first song is free on their website now. But hey! Its nothing like any of their older stuff, I think its great! Check it out.

I still think 26 singles in 12 months is a bit much though.

I listened to that new song and it made me want to listen to Waking Up by Elastica which made me want to listen to No More Heroes by The Stranglers which made me want to listen to White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane which brought me right back to this new Ash song.

I think Ash are attempting something that is placed in science rather than the arts and we should all get as far away as possible. I don't see it ending well.

What a stupid idea, with that many singles the best singles would have no time to build up airplay as another would be getting released soon after. Also I could see people being irritated by constant Ash releases whilst lets be honest, no way will even half these songs be single-worthy. Maybe 8 without a set timeframe for each over 12 months would make more sense. Terrible move, won't work

yeah I agree I don't get why they don't just make an album. It's like the way mike skinner just gave away songs on twitter, they're going about it officially and it's all a bit stupid

I dunno why Ash are doing it but the Smashin Pumpkins are doing the same thing and said its because people only want to hear the singles and not the album. Personally I don't agree with it as most singles seem to be lumped onto Albums just to get airplay and because if they are catchy they will appeal to non fans. I think it's the album tracks that really show what a band are all about.
