skoda octiva turns off when going around a bend

    I have a 01 octiva and when I going around some bends it turns off, goes dead. What could this be? It doesnt happen all the time.

    is that not dangerous?? does the steering lock or anything? lol

    I would recommend taking it to a skoda dealer and get them to check it out for you.

    Did you purchase the car recently?
    Do you lose braking when it cuts out?
    How does it effect the steering? (ie. does the power steering go as well?)
    Does the electronic equipment turn off? (stereo, lights, etc.)

    Even if I can tell you what is causing the problem, there is nothing that you will be able to do yourself that can fix it, you need to bring it into a garage straight away. You could be caught up in a very serious accident.

    My Octavia RS had a similar problem. When coming to a stop the engine would die, but thankfully there was still enough assistance for the brakes to bring me to a halt in time. Was a PITA trying to plan breaking keeping it in gear and keeping the revs high.

    No idea what the issue was or how it was fixed, I parked the car up for a long while, put a new battery in to it eventually and got it serviced. Seemed to solve all the issues I had.

    Hopefully they don't re-occur as the Brother in Law is now driving it, and he's a lot bigger than me!

    Had a similar problem years ago with another in the VW breed.
    After much confusion and investigation, found the problem.

    I had a small key attached to the ignition key. This key was getting caught between the steering wheel and the steering column. As a result, when you turned the wheel, the key would be pulled from the ignition, just enough to shut the engine off anyway!!

    Dodgy electrical connection would be most likely cause. For example, a relation of mine had an old Renault 25 that he got for free. Not a thing wrong with the car other than after a couple of miles of driving it would start to splutter and often cut out. I found the problem to be a broken spade connector on the fuel pump that was making a connection while the car was stood still but coming away on the move. While the circuit was broken the car was running on the fuel in the filter but if the pump didn't fire up again for long enough to fill the filter the car would cut out.

    Start with your battery connections, make sure your battery is secure and not tipping over when you go round a bend and shorting off something. Check the chassis end of the earth from the battery (black lead) and the positive to the starter motor. Give a gentle tug on the wires connected to the starter motor and the alternator but make sure you know where to put them back in case you pull off a spade connector. If it's a diesel, locate the fuel solenoid (most likely on the injector pump) and check the wiring to it.

    what version of Octavia is it?
    is it the 1.8 Turbo VRS version?

    and last question,
    does it have a dump valve on it?
