NCT headlight question

    Hi all,
Failed the nct because nearside headlight was high. Offside passed. It doesn't say how high or anything. I can obviously lower the angle of the lights but just wondering could I end up having them too low and failing for that? Just not sure how much to lower them. I know its probably a problem of the headlights not being aligned properly but really doesn't seem to be much of a difference.
So basically should I just lower the lights as far as possible or what would be best? My dial has a scale of 0-3, was 0 at nct and now I just have it at about 1 1/2.
    Thanks for the help

The internal function is irrelevant. You need to open the bonnet and physically do it. As a rough guide, park facing a wall with the lights on. Then adjust the nearside one until it is roughly level with the offside one. Very unscientific but it may do the trick.

Thanks Wishbone. Do you know how to adjust it from under the bonnet? '00 Polo if that helps. I know it won't properly align them but will the internal function lowering the lights be enough to pass the nct anyway?

Just bring it to a garage FFS. it'll be cheaper than the other probable retest you'll have to do when it's still wrong.

The NCT will (should) set the lights to the highest level (usually 0) before checking them.

This is the setting at which they check the alignment.

If one lamp is at the correct height, you could adjust the other to match by shining them on a wall when parked on level ground. This needs to be done by adjusting a screw a the headlamp mounting point.

Based on your question, I suspect you are not too familiar with mechanical adjustments, so your best bet would be to go to a garage where they have alignment equipment.

Cheers lads. Might just bring it to a garage then if only a few quid. Just annoying when should be able to do it myself

There should be a screw adjustment on the side of the light assembly. It's easy enough to do. (The internal adjuster will raise and lower both lights at the same rate but won't compensate for a light which is out of kilter).
