would anyone be able to tell me the way to decomission a car properly?
where do i take it and does it cost me money?
i tink driving it off a pier is frowned upon!

  • Call a metal recycling company like molly metals in wexford, they collect cars for free for recycling

Molloy Metals used to collect for free, but now want €50. I called them a few months ago and it was going to be free, but some weeks later they said there would be a charge. However, when I reminded the nice lady on the phone that I had called before, she said she would waive the fee. Cool. Perhaps it depends how far they have to come, and if I could have brought the car to them they would have given me €100. Sad to see my car picked up with a grab arm and dumped in the back of their lorry. Sniff.

Contact the distributor for the make of car you have (or take a look at their Irish website, most of them have the information under an "Environment" section or similar).

Ask them for your nearest EOLV (End Of Life Vehicle) disposal centre. By law [The End of Life Vehicles Directive (2000/53/EC)], each manufacturer has to designate Approved Treatment Facilities that you can bring old vehicles for proper disposal, and most of them have one in each (or nearly each) county. You'll get a Certificate of Destruction.
    • You have to bring the vehicle yourself, or arrange its delivery
    • You'll probably need to bring the log book for the vehicle
    • It's free of charge
    • The vehicle has to be intact (you can't take "essential components" off yourself)
    • You can't fill it full of rubbish, and hope that they'll take that too (some people must try this stunt!)

For instance, here's Ford's information on EOLV disposal: http://www.ford.ie/AboutFord/Environment/EndOfLifeVehicles

Ring a few breakers and ask them woul they take it off you, costs 150 quid to get a car crushed because they've to drain the fuel and take off the tyres and stuff like that.
