I've been planning on buying a GPS system for my car. As I do some cycling I was wondering if it's possible to buy a dual purpose one? Any recommendations? Thanks

garmin edge 705 has a car mapping mode, but it's not very big and theres no easy way of mounting it in a car, nor does it voice prompt

I think the new oregon 550 gps's might fit the bill - they do have street and road mapping as well as having all the bike related details covered - not sure if they do the turn by turn directions though (all the PR blurbs say is 'onscreen turn-by-turn directions to your destination)

You might want to ask to have this moved out of the Adverts subforum.

Car GPSs tend to have crap battery life and not be waterproof.
Bike GPSs tend to have no voice prompts and a small screen.

AFAIK there is not one product that does both well.

I have a Garmin 705 for the bike and a Garmin Nuvi-something for the car. Stupid isn't it?

Me too, but I don't think it's stupid. After all, I wear different clothes while in car than when I'm on the bike

And you ride a bike but don't drive a car :)....

They are for differnt purposes. The NUVI is just route mapping a directions where as the 705 is essentially a performance monitor, gps recorder, with mapping built in.... I'd say each is fit for purpose and they are different enough that you need both.

It wouldn't take much to make a 705 usable for the the car. Voice prompts and a small speaker, headphone jack or bluetooth would do it.

I love my Garmin Nuvi. Stop trying to take it away from me.

Oh, and a massive 8" screen.

I have a Garmin gpsmap60cx which I use for outdoors and the car, turn by turn is prompted by a beep, which I find less annoying than speach. There are cycle mounts for it and I have considered getting one. however almost all internet reviews seem to mention the unit falling from the cradle and being irreversibly damaged. So I havn't taken the plunge yet. may just tape it to my crossbar if I need it on a long journey.

Imagine the upforce you'd get zipping down a hill with that on the bike - you'd take off!!!
