iPhone v1 Problems On Pay-As-You-Go

I have a first generation iPhone from O2 that I want to be able to use with a pay-as-you-go account. When I stick the SIM card in it says 'SIM card locked. Please insert an unlocked SIM card'.

Has anyone successfully used a first generation iPhone on pay-as-you-go with O2?

I understand the iPhone is intended for prepay billing but does anyone have a way around it?
