    Hi,

The hard drive in my laptop went bust so I'm looking to buy a new one. Thing is, I don't know what to look out for so that I get one that works with my laptop. I've measured my old hard drive so I figure I need to get a 2"5 hard drive. Any other specifics I should know or am I guaranteed it'll work in my laptop as long as it's 2"5?

    Thanks in advance!

The connector at the end where it plugs in - is it made of lots of seperate little pins (old type)? Then you need an IDE drive. On the other hand, if it has two small, flat plastic blades covered in metal contacts instead you'll need a modern SATA drive.

Don't know how much you know so I say it anyway, you need to see if you need sata or ide.

    Hi,

Thanks guys. I don't know very much, so what you've said so far is very helpful. I think I'm going to need the older type of one as my broken hard drive seems to have about 22 pins that you insert into the computer.

If they are actual 'pins' sticking out, then it's a IDE drive alright. You're looking for a 2.5" IDE drive, often described as ATA or PATA (instead of SATA). (:pac:)

You also want to check if your computers IDE controller and bios supports 48-bit LBA. If it doesn't you won't be able to use any drive over 128GB. (Actually, you will be able to use the drive, but you'll have to make smaller partitions to allow for the lba limitation. That shouldn't be a major problem, just an inconvenience.)

Have a look out for something like a Samsung HM160HC (160GB, 5400rpm). Should be around the fastest 2.5" IDE drive on the market, can be gotten for around €40-50 on ebay. Or for capacity, something like the Western Digital WD3200BEVE (320GB).
