A bit of help please.

Right, ive just gotten a second hand iPhone 3G its 2.2.1 . Wasnt sure if it was unlocked so i inserted my 02 sim card into it and well i found out it isnt. So now its up to me to unlock it. Had a look through the iclarrified site. And was just looking can anyone show me how to do it? What i gathered i should do is this.

First i need to jail break it so id follow this.

Is that what people would do or can you recomend me something better. Dont want to start messing with it and break it.

ok first thing is you will not break the iphone. I have mine unlocked working perfect on vodafone and itunes etc, Go through the steps like you said or if in doupt youtube has loads of vids on how to jail break/unlock iphone .hope that helps and another great site is www.momyi.com i got loads of help tips etc there.

Ye well i knew that i couldnt break it (unless i started smashing it in frustracion.) But thanks ill have a look through that site just wanted to know are the right steps before i started.

Right went and started to unlock this thing by following the steps form icarrified. Downloaded what i need to and went to retore the iphone with that file and after about ten minutes of it looking like it was was working an unknown error occured in itunes.
Can anyone tell me what to do next. Thanks

Sorry is this an irish iphone 3g?

thats locked and that you want to use with an o2 simcard?

If the answer to both questions is yes then you dont need to unlock it (not that you will be able to but you wont need to) all you should do is possibly do a restore through itunes which will wipe it and start again as a new phone then insert your o2 sim card activate it and away you should go

Dont know if it is Irish or not i gathered that it doesnt really make a difference. And yes i do want to use it PAYG with 02.
I am restoring it at the moment. From what i gathered as well that you should jailbreak it though to get the most out of it. Would you agree?

The bad news if its not an irish iphone and it is 2.2.1 with the basband update to 2.30XXXX you wont be able to software unlock it others here have said you can use a sim adaptor like rebel sim or other I have no experience with these so cant really help there. Once a phone has the 2.2.1 update it can no longer be software unlocked and you cant undo this update but to make sure you need to check its baseband http://www.iphoneheat.com/2009/03/how-to-check-firmware-version-and-baseband-version-of-iphone/
if the baseband is 2.30XXX its not software unlockable

If you have only just got the phone I dont think there is much need yet to jailbreak it perhaps for sbsettings( a settings control panel) and maybe cycorder but even then I would say there is enough to play with initially to ignore jailbreaking so soon.

If it is an irish iphone you have no need to unlock to use a pay as you go sim you just ahve to use an o2 pay as you go sim as the phones are locked to that network( if it is an irish phone that is)

Alright understand that but at the moment I have no idea how to fix it. It looks like its locked at the moment. Turn it on it has a usb pointing at itunes with a locked sign over it. Tried to restore it with itunes but its looking for my sim. and when i put my sim in it say it wasnt supported. What do i do now at this stage i really just want it back so i can use it as an ipod and use the apps like i was able to before i tried to unlock it.

Edit: it is 2.2.1 nd the baseband is 2.30 or whatever.
