Quick DOE Question (Expiry Time)

    Hi,
My tax is out at the end of May on my van, if I recall, last year I wasn't able to get it DOE'd till mid june, which is still fine by tax accounts as you're ok for the month after the expiry aswell. So as far as I know, my DOE expires in June, so I would probably be able to tax it for another year as my DOE cert is still valid. I want to get the DOE done regardless as it would no doubt effect insurance etc if it wasn't valid after June, plus it's reassuring to know it's ok.

I don't have the DOE cert in front of me so I can't check but I'm just wondering, if I get the DOE done now, before my tax is out, will it expire exactly a year from the time I get it done, meaning next year, I'll need to get it done before it expires again, which could be another 2 weeks, then the next year another 2 weeks before it expires, meaning each year it will need to be earlier and earlier and after a few years, I'll have lost a year on it:pac:

If anyone knows for sure and could clear it up I'd appreciate it :)

I'm pretty sure the DOE expires 1 year from the pass date, not like the NCT where it's from reg date.

I'd tax your van now, and organise a DOE for the expiry date of your current cert. As long as it passes you can keep doing that every year.

Just checked it there, Test date 3 Sep 2008, Expiry 2 Sep 2009, definitely not getting it done now and losing 4 months off it :)

You won't lose the time. I look after the fleet in the job here. Someone decided that witht he tax nearly out they would get the DOE done. As there was already a DOE still valid on the van I held it until the Van was next due a taxing, when the DOE would have ben up and sent it in. Even though there was nearly six months since the DOE, I got another full years DOE cert.

That's a bit complicated oldmanmondeo :pac: Are you saying you got a years tax with only 6 months left on the DOE, or you didn't have a valid DOE for 6 months and just waited till your next tax renewal date to get the DOE done?

    Just another quick question
For a retest, does it have to be retested in the same place to avail of the half price retest?

Taxing a vehicle for 12 months with six months left on a DOE cert is an old trick, it still means that you have to test the vehicle when the DOE expires, if you don't you come under the penalty points for no roadworthiness certificate.

Yes you have to bring the vehicle back to the same test centre.

Another old trick is to test it in the middle of the month.

Then back tax it to the start of the month. In a years time your tax is up but you still have a valid cert for 2 weeks so you can tax it again.

Thanks, would have been handier bringing it to a closer place to my mechanic for the retest but it's no biggie.

About the driving with a non roadworthy vehicle, I definitely wouldn't want to do that as my mind goes back to about 3 years ago when a school bus crashed and it was found out it had an expired DOE. As far as I recall anyway..
