    Hello,

I am travelling to Donegal for a weekend of Links golf in June,
one of the lads travelling suggested we get in an extra round on the way up there on the Friday, leave Dublin very early on the Friday get to the Golf club on the way, play a round of golf and then on to Donegal.

Can anyone recommend a good course on Route to Donegal and within the 40 euro a round budget.

    http://www.concrawood.ie/

I looked at this course but it looks way to tricky for me!

    Thanks in advance

On seconds thoughts Concra Wood looks great, very difficult looking back nine though.

I'd say get to donegal early there are 18 courses here, but you could call into prehan in city of derry on way. Its a nice inland course, not too difficult and in immaculate condition. A good warm up before the links golf in donegal.

We are playing at the Rospenna links so not sure if the Derry course is near that.

I'll add to Stockdam's list, starting nearest Dublin and following a more easterly route

    http://www.headfortgolfclub.ie (2 courses)

    http://www.nuremore.com

    http://www.rossmoregc.com

Newtownstewart in Co. Tyrone (no website)

Concra Wood is an excellent track and in a beautiful location. And if you're lucky enough to meet the lovely Karen, then your day's complete. The back 9 is tougher, but still a lot of fun.

All depends on your route i suppose but id definatly recommend Slieve Russell and Headfort New. Havnt played Concra Wood yet but the lads on here rave about it. I hear Lough Erne in Fermanagh is now accepting green fees too.
Alternatively you can just head straight to Donegal. Great courses to be had up there so you cant go wrong either way.

Yeah a Donegal course is looking the better option as it will ease the drive up to Donegal.
The link to Donegal Golf club shows the fee's are 55 euro
We were looking for about 40 or so.

It will take about four hours to get up to Downings area from Dublin. three and a half to letterkenny Depending on Traffic and which part of the city you are leaving from.

If you are leaving in the morning also the quickest route would be M1 turn off ardee through Monahan and Tyrone into strabane lifford letterkenny etc.

So I would suggest that you play one of the Donegal courses mid afternoon after you arrive.
    you could play dunfannaghy (W) : http://www.dunfanaghygolfclub.com/index.htm
    Letterkenny as previously mentioned
Portsalon http://www.portsalongolfclub.ie/ on the Fanad Peninsula
    Otway http://www.gui.ie/clubs_info.asp?id=384
have a look at the GUI website as they have a Google maps link indicating locations of the clubs etc.

by playing one of the donegal clubs you will only have a short(ish) drive to get to your accomodation
    hope this helps
    enjoy gods country :)

i grew up playing in donegal & imho the best courses are ballyliffen, murvagh & rosapenna. if youre coming up from dublin then youll most likely go near strabane, thats a decent inland course which would be a change from the rosapenna links experience.

Thats great value for what you get. A fantastic course. You'd pay twice the price for some sh!te compared to it on the East Coast!

    Ichiro,

Have you played rosapenna before? they have the sandy hills course and the old tom morris course also. I love the back nine on the old tom morris.

As for sandy hills, lovely wild course but it humbled me like no other golf course has in years. If your driving is off leave your driver in the boot of your car .

Firstly many thanks to all the recomendations.
The group that are travelling have decided to play the Donegal Golf Club on the first friday as the warm up round, but I have the fear that it might be a step up to much for the group, no real low handicappers, tops 10, highest 23, or am I just bailing out of a good challenge?

Which course from the Links one's in Donegal could you recommend as a good warmer uper?

    Thanks in Advance

    Dunfannaghy isn't too difficult...........

Except when the wind blows and then it's almost unplayable.

there is a new course in cavan now, its only a 9hole at the moment, 18holes in august / sept. but if you are driving by in theeve with little time for a full 18, this is the best option.. 2mile from cavan town

its a part of the radison hotel,

As suggested, there's Dunfanaghy. Or, just south west of Donegal Golf Club, there's Bundoran. A useful and close together pairing that means you won't be rushing to get up to the north of Donegal. The Old Tom Morris course at Rosapenna is probably the most entertaining links as it mixes up a great variety of holes.

I agree with you that Donegal GC is not a warmer-upper - it's one of the longest courses in Ireland. But it's magnificent.

Best of luck with the weather.

its a 2 hour drive to sligo - and then 30 mins to murvagh. if ye want to play strandhill (5 miles from sligo on the coast with great scenery) its an 18 hole par 70 course . i will get ye out for 20 euro a head - a lot of inland courses are like bogs down here at the moment . pm me if you want any further details . its a great society course-not too difficult unless the atlantic wind bares its teeth

This is the best course I've played in Donegal. Its really challenging and long when its windy.
