I had a a coupe of hours spare and decided to do a item for item direct check between the "new" tesco pricing versus the standard tesco pricing.

Registered 2 John Doe names / Addresses on tesco.ie. One in Dundalk, one in carlow.

Made purchase of 110 items that would be in a standard family trolly. With the exception of 2 items every item was same brand & same size. No buy one get one free offers or other temporary offers included. No alcohol included.

    Result

    Tesco Dundalk €238.48

    Tesco Carlow €274.44

Now if I get another couple of hours that I'm really bored with, I'll do the same with Tesco in Derry.

Wasn't sure which forum it wa suited to - but I'm not saying rip off, just interesting to see that the difference of an overall basket of everyday goods is about 15%.

If a real change is made throughout Irealnd by all the main players, then we could (should??) all see this level of price reductions no matter where we shop.

That is interesting, in another thread somebody said it was 22% off a certain number of selected products, and overall it was something like 8% off. Of course the person (allegedly) read it wrongly and decided that tesco were lying since everything was not dropped by 22%. This shows to me that it wasn't a marketing trick like others tried to make out.

2 different countries with hugely different operating costs etc. The one above was a very worthwhile comparison though.

If you simply just want to point out extremes between 2 countries then why not try tesco in China. http://www.cn.tesco.com/en/aboutus/aboutus_inchina_ho.htm

If planning on driving up north then you should include petrol, mileage deprectiation of value on the car, servicing, potential earnings lost when you could have spent the time doing overtime etc.....

Very interesting; thanks for posting it. For a fully comparable comparison, you should drop from both baskets the two items you weren't able to match across the two stores.

p.s. thread name says Drogheda; post says Dundalk. They're not the same, you know. Drogheda is a hole more southerly by c22 miles.

One item was Kingsmill Bread in Dundalk (brennans wasn't on the list) and I choose brennans in the Carlow store. The other item was Butter, Anchor in Dundalk & Kerrygold in Carlow. Difference on both products was negligble.

As for drogheda / dundalk - both these tescos operate under the new "Border Pricing".

I did this with 'my favorites' shop.

OK so it's not a family shop but shopping for a couple with more health and beauty and ready meal and no meat, but the difference was €128 (Waterford) €86 Dundalk.

I'm trying to get a link to the two shops but you have to log in with my details to see the details.

This could really be something when it goes country wide.

My source in Tesco (i.e. the delivery van driver) told me this evening that the Galway store has started three days of restocking in advance of it shifting to the new product-sourcing/pricing arrangements.

My guess is they will do another load of stores on the June bank Holiday. Newbridge has been out of stock of quite a few standard items for the past couple of weeks and a lot of new items have started to appear.

    Still prefer super-valu though! :)

Somebody brought a tub of coleslaw / potato salad to our house that was purchased in Tesco Kilrush today, it was priced 1GBP, I have no idea what it cost in euro but if it was around 1.20 then it looked like good value. i do not know if kilrush has been rebranded yet.

The other thread you are referring to was based on figures from a report by the Irish Times and RTE not just one (allegdly) illiterate poster.

However even if you were correct 15% is not 22% and would constitute a marketing trick

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055564837

I personally would rely on the 'national consumer agency' for my information on product pricing in which it was shown that Tesco were the dearest supermarket in ireland on branded goods.

    http://www.consumerconnect.ie/eng/News_+_Research/Price_Comparisons/Price_Comparisons_February_2009/Price-survey-Feb-2009.html

This 8% reduction is only in a few stores along the border and with fuel costs etc as you've stated... ....... Tesco are already the dearest supermarket and with the recent price reductions in the other supermarkets it will be very interesting to see what the difference in price will be in the next price check by the nca.

Tesco also isn't sourcing it's produce from Irish wholesalers anymore because it needed to....... to bring down prices :pac:

Although tesco just made record profits and makes 50 % over and above their UK profit even before the change in wholesalers.

The change in wholesalers will without doubt affect Ireland adversley( as shown in the link above). The fact is that tesco havn't brought down their prices by 8% except in 11 stores out of 86 stores which for example is of no use to anyone in Dublin, Galway, Limerick Cork etc etc

well well well , looks like the price cuts in Drogheda didnt last long.

Just back from the new tesco there, and low and behold form last week to this week there has been an increase of nearly 30% on some things i regularly buy.

Dont have my receipt to hand but what i can remember in terms of prices:
Amstel beer 8 pack last week 9.49 , tonight 9.99
Tiger loaf was €1 is now 1.35
    mouth wash up .12
    crisps up 33c

To be fair though there were reductions on some other things like muller fruit corner .39c each yummy :p

Over all though so much for the long term cuts , mind you how many of us here believed that anyway

those muller yoghurts are all overpriced anyway so the supermarkets can have them half price or BOGOF almost constantly!

True , what amazed me was people not checking prices, they where .39 each
when i was there picking what flavors i wanted i had to point out to 2 people getting the 6packs that it was cheaper to get 6 on their own
