I have a hybrid with hubs, definitely won't be going back
They don't make it any more, it's the Orbit Orion. I have a lot of good things to say about the SRAM 7 hub too :)

None of the cons put you off then?

Took me a while to figure out what was going on here... all bikes have 2 hubs :D

Those hub gears are pretty cool though -wouldn't mind getting a tourer with 'em, but for commuting around Dublin, single speed is plenty!

Not with my knees unfortunately. I couldn't do the likkle hills without gears.

They do, but the pros outweigh them.
My commute involves a 1.5km 1 in 8 climb, so it really uses all 7 of the gears.

But for me the ratio are just-about sufficient and I'm not in a hurry so the weight doesn't bother me. And I do like

    - Low maintenance and high reliability
    - Switching down at the lights

Looks simular to a Canondale Badboy 8. Sold my trek Alfa1000 because I don't cycle any more but if I go back it'll be the canondale or something simular with hub gears and disc brakes

I have the biggest hub of them all - the Nuvinci CVT hub

weighs in at a measly 3.5kg. The really neat thing about it is that it's perfectly smooth shifting - it never skips and never misses a gear (mainly because there are no gears to skip). For around town it's great, though slightly impractical over longer distances.

    impractical as in heavy?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,038 ✭✭✭penexpers

Yeah, it's pretty tough to climb hills with it.

What's the weight of the bike excluding the hub? ;)

Fairly light actually. It would be quite nippy without the hub.

penexpers and Civilian_Target what bikes are you using?

(excuse the stupid newbie possibly off topic question)

Do you have to change gear differently with hub gears? I have been cycling around on an old bike recently with hub gears and it keeps slipping and not going into gear for me.

    Orbit Orion, 2002 model
The last one, 2005, is here

Weighs in at about 17kg, but it's been on the go since 2002, probably approaching 30,000km now. I've had to replace the clapper box for the back gear last year, but other than that it's still going strong.

I reckon the rear hub adds a kilo or two, and the front dynahub probably isn't too light either.

You probably have to adjust it. Check this: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/nexus-mech.html

For an all round utility bike you can't beat a hub gear. I bust the derailleur on my long suffering 18 speed hybrid two years ago when a crate of beer slipped off the back and the bungee pulled it into the derailleur which stuck in the spokes and was completely mangled beyond repair.
This will never happen on a hub gear. My only qualm with my Specialized Globe Comp IG8 is that it is geared a little bit low. I could easily put a bigger crank and a few extra chain links in to solve that though.
