Repair hal.dll without XP CD?

Hello nice and lovely computer-literate, radiant, angelic, selfless, intelligent people,

I ran a registry repair programme last night and now I'm getting the old system 32/hal.dll corrupt or missing message when I boot up my laptop. Unfortunately, I'm living abroad at the moment and don't have my Windows XP discs with me, so I can't do the usual fix.

I've downloaded hal.dll from the interwebs on a different computer, with the intention of putting it on a CD/DVD, but I don't know how I'm meant to run/install/fix/whatever it from DOS (if DOS is what you call the initial black screen situation) on my own laptop... The sites that offer it as a fix aren't terribly clear about what you're meant to do with it once you have it.

Alternatively, I'm wondering if I could repair it from Ubuntu? I don't have Ubuntu installed yet but if I did, could I access my Windows files and repair hal.dll from there? Ultimately, I want to get rid of lousy Windows anyway but obviously I don't want to lose my files - so if I install Ubuntu, can I transfer my files from Windows, then increase the Ubuntu partition and get rid of Windows? In which case I wouldn't need to bother with this hal.dll nonsense. Or would I?

Thanks in advance for any help. I can't access a load of essay that was due today and I'm losing my mind.

Get yourself a copy of ubuntu 9.04 live cd and boot from that, you should be able to get access to your windows files from there and overwrite the old hal.dll.

You can download the live cd from here http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

choose a location near to you.

Should not take too long if you have a decent connection, then just burn the image to cd and boot from it, it must be burnt as a cd image not a file so google if that phases you.

    I know :D

BTW When you get into your files, upload the ones you need and the ones you cannot lose to a gmail acc or the like and you'll have them backed up, never never NEVER leave yourself exposed to hardware failure by not backing up.
