    Hi,

A friend of mine has a criminal record from when he was a teenager. He was charged with possession of cannibis. He didn't go to jail but i think he did community service. He was brought up in tallaght where things like this were a way of life. That was seven years ago and he is not a criminal. My question is, can he apply for garda with criminal record? Is the discretion at the commissioner to determine whether or not he is of "good character"?or is it a pre-requisite that you are clean before applying. He made a stupid mistake when he was younger but this backgroudn would actuallly help him in the force. He most definitely is not of bad character

    Please reply!

The odds would be against him I'd say.

Oh, and lol at this ^^

Agreed. Wouldn't count on it at the best of times so if they decided to recruit-which won't be any time soon-history has shown, because of the recession, there will be an avalanche of applications so there will be thousands of people with no black mark against them to choose from.

I wouldn't think growing up in Tallaght should go against him. I grew up in Cabra West and joined the Force 30 years ago. 7 of my class joined the Gardai, and I'm sure seven others went to prison, so it's more to do with how you were brought up not where you were brought up.

Don't know much about current recruitment policy as I left about 14 years ago but a brother of one of my classmates in Templemore who was from the Northside as well, was being released from a stretch in the big house and it wasn't held against him.

Even career criminals are stooping to low levels during the recession.:pac:

He's more worried about the drugs conviction than where he's from.

There are 3 relevant questions here:

    (i)When was he convicted?
(ii)How much cannabis was he in possession of and why?
(iii)What age was he when he was convicted?

They review any previous convictions on a case to case basis. Best thing to do is when the time comes around to applying, be open and honest about EVERYTHING and they will make the decision. They fator in things like how long ago it was, the seriousness of the offence, remorse and if everything else on the application is fine and the persons character is 100% then there is a chance he'll be approved. Its definately not a "no chance of getting in" scenario.
