BMW diff swap

Quick question to anybody who might know, I'm swapping out the diff in my E34 520i. I've always thought the gearing was too short (she'll never be a sports car, after all) so is it any problem to throw in a diff from a 525i? I'm looking for a straightforward change and the longer gearing would suit the character of the car…

How will the diff change the gear ratios?

The rear diff determines the final drive ratio, which will make all gears higher or lower.

I know that, I'm just wondering will the car take it? As in, would the driveshaft be the same as the one from the 525. I know the gearing would be taller which is what I'm after and I think the speedo cable goes to the diff in these cars and not the transmission like all the other cars I've had. If the speedo's going to read wrong then I'd just as soon put another 520 diff in it. Not worth the speeding tickets.
